Gearbox/clutch drama

Sadly I must work today but will get a pic of the other side of the clip ASAP. I don't remember which way around it was facing on the shaft but I'll go through the 100's of pix I've taken and see if I can determine which way it was oriented.

What's the lead time on destruction of 2nd gear for those who've experienced it? Bear in mind my bike has 45k km on it without any hint of a tranny problem. So if it was 'manufacturer error' I would expect it to have gone pear-shaped well before now.

My riding style hasn't changed in 25yrs of riding and like Paul already noted - in line 4cyl japanese bikes run similar components and I've never had a transmission issue in hundreds of thousands of kilometres on those bikes.

Mr Hunt \as I checked my invoice here are the parts that were exchanged for peace of mind in my tranny above and beyond the one needed to be changed
gear output 1st, gear ouput 5th gear output 4th and fork selector 1st &4th if you want them I can ship them anytime just cost of shipping +$ 20 ..so I can tell my wife I recouped my expenses!!

You're a champion! I'll be touch once I've got my required parts list finalised

The most worn clip is the culprit.... the other one is included for comparison purposes

In the top pic in previous post you can see the spline impression - I assume this is a result of being forced out of its race by the sprocket

Great post and thankyou to all, so interesting. The engines at least used to be made in Thailand, someone said they are now made in other places too. I dont want to miscredit Thai manufacturing but could this be a factor? Sloppy assembly?

I think a lot of bearing issues are assembly line related - ie they are put it backwards. Generally, Second gear and detent spring problems are more poor design than manufacturing issues. No one has come forward yet with a problem circlip like I've had.

My local dealer said they have never seen a 3rd gear issue in 12 years of selling and servicing rockets, so sadly I don't think mine is a manufacturing fault. Still, I'll take it a bit further with triumph and see what comes of it.

They should do a goodwill case and at least give you the parts. Good luck!

I am puzzled. if the cir-clip was not warped/damage on install you would think there would be more then 4.5 heavy spline indentations. From this view it still looks like it was installed assbackwards. Did you get a look at the orientation of the clip in the manual so you can tell me if the radius on the outside face of the cir-clip is on the side with the spline indentations?

Also since she took some hits from the splines how damaged is the splines (mushrooming) on the shaft they might have clean up which is why it took 3 gear a little while to wonder off.
