Gearbox/clutch drama

No burring/mushrooming on the splines and they don't look like they've been rounded off either.

I can't read anywhere in the manual about orientation of the circlip...several beers in right now though

Ah its in the shaft assemby area. They havevexploded views showing correct orientation. Enjoy the beers work tomorrow as it keeps the mind fresh :D

Warp i think that u r wright about the orentation of the clip was wrong. after seeing the rest of the pics that clip may have been spread a little. i think that probably a hit from the gear and sleeve forced the clip part way out of the grove (where the 4.5 shaft teeth took a bite out of the clip.)
jmo once the clip was part way out of the grove then may be the dogs grabbed the clip and spun it causing it to come out and creating the area that looks like it was cut off around the inner surface.
car stuff
when setting up clutch pacs in auto trans because u might have to change the thickness of the clutches about four or five times i would leave to the inside snap ring hang out a little so it was easy to remove to assemble the the thicker clutches. well once and a while i would forget to put that last part of snap ring into the grove and it would always come out some times before it left the shop.

They do make a different style circlip that is made of very thin metal but wraps around two or three times (think of a couple wraps of a slinky). Not sure if they would be stronger.[/QUOT

keep enjoying the BEERS and youll be putting the circlip in backwards LOL

I think a lot of bearing issues are assembly line related - ie they are put it backwards. Generally, Second gear and detent spring problems are more poor design than manufacturing issues. No one has come forward yet with a problem circlip like I've had.

My local dealer said they have never seen a 3rd gear issue in 12 years of selling and servicing rockets, so sadly I don't think mine is a manufacturing fault. Still, I'll take it a bit further with triumph and see what comes of it.
don't expect too much from triumph I wrote to them a friendly honet letter about my transmission problems mentioning the low mileage and good care etc etc, and I got a simple reply from triumph america
I quote " your roadster is now out of warranty sorry!! cannot help" that was it.

I'm still confused by the description in the manual. So from what I have interpreted, the chamfered side of the clip should be facing the thrust bearing or sprocket that it's retaining. If that is the correct interpretation, then unfortunately mine was installed correctly!

I can't tell by looking which way around the clip goes - I go by feel. To me, the chamfered egde feels smooth and rounded while the square face feels quite sharp by comparison. On the broken clip the face with all the spline indentations feels like it was the square face.
