gear position sensor problems

I have a 2103 R3T with about 2,000 miles on it. From the time I got it, the engine light has lit, and TuneECU showed a gear position sensor error. The bike didn't give me any trouble other than a slightly inconsistent neutral light.

I read up on the updated gear position sensor, ordered it, and installed it along with the fly lead. I reset the warning and everything is working great.

After about 25 miles the check engine light is on again, and TuneECU is showing the same gear position sensor error. Everything else is working great, neutral light is perfect.

Any ideas?
 
I think I figured it out.

With TuneECU connected I noticed it was not reliably indicating 4th gear as I shifted through them (with the bike powered on but the engine not running). The others seemed pretty solid but in and out of 4th was hit or miss.

I loosened the bolts and removed the sensor and determined that TuneECU did reliably indicate the gear changes as I manually rotated the sensor post with my fingers.

I reinserted the sensor and noticed there is a lot of slop around the bolts that hold it in. I found that when I rotate the sensor in the socket as far to the right (clockwise) as possible, the correct gear now seems to show reliably. I held it firmly in that position while tightening the bolts and I think the problem is solved.

I’ll update if that changes in the future.
 
You can put a witness mark there with a small center punch on both sides
