I always say, if you have a question go to the people who know or been there and done that. My 2005 R3's fuel pump has gone south, of course just after I just filled the tank. (Helped refuel every riding lawn mower in my neighbor this afternoon, that is a big **** tank.) Should I go go with OEM or one of the aftermarket units I see out there? Any tips for the install, "ie" should I order a new sealing gasket. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I generally don't work on anything past 1976......Thanks in advance all......George
 
Yes, if it were me I'd get a new gasket. I have not replaced one, but read up on it because I thought I might have to. I found a lot of after market fuel pumps that will fit. Found out that the one in my Rocket and 1998 RAV 4 take the same fuel pump!
Do you have the service manual?
 
Go aftermarket. You may need more than just that. I will write some more tomorrow with a tip or two. I am in the middle of doing the in tank fuel system right now.

Edit: As you are riding a 2005 I think you should replace all consumables inside the tank. Every hose and rubber piece I have touched in mine has been hard, brittle or melted. Adept Power Sorts has a good selection of parts as does Hermy's.

After looking at the parts diagram you will possibly need to replace #8 and #9. Check the small sections of fuel hose, #13, a couple of mine were cracked. I would replace #19 also. Be very careful when reinstalling everything. If you go to the recommended torque for the nuts on the bottom of the tank you might snap them off. I just snug mine down. Also while there you may as well do a fuel filter, the NAPA Gold 3032 works fine.

Thank you for the tip on the filter, 57 dollars from Triumph, that is just plain crazy talk. The first visual inspection looks decent in my humble opinion. Everything in tact and even the rubber bits still have some give. I plan on replacing them all anyway, just to cover bases to include a new base gasket. Gaskets and hose from Hermy's, filter Napa, and pump from the Fuel Pump Factory is the preliminary plan. Just FYI to anyone else, the main clue in the diagnosis was the missing small click I used to hear when the gauges made their sweep. Of course the bike would not run, had fire to the plugs, and kicked right over when a little carb cleaner was shot into the throttle bodies. Picking up a set of new plugs tomorrow also, good time to change them out with everything out of the way.....

That does look good. Anything that comes in Triumph bag is crazy expensive. I don't know what you have for a spark plug socket but O'Reillys sells a nice 18mm spark plug socket that has a magnetic ring in it to hold onto the plug. It makes getting them out a snap. I only found out because my other 18mm socket went south so I had to get a new one. The NAPA filter comes with 4 clamps and two lengths of hose. I still went with the Triumph hose, I wasn't sure the NAPA could be submerged but it probably can be.

And I'll add that a universal joint socket adapter will make getting around the frame to the front spark plugs much easier, too. Just changed all my plugs a few months ago. I was dreading that job, but it ended up being pretty straight forward. I had to replace a coil wire and boot, so figured with the tank off, might as well do the plugs while in there. You can get a set at Harbor Fright for $10.
