Front end wobble returned; this time I went down

Took bike in once, handlebars had a loose bolt. Took bike back still wobbly, tightened headstock so much I had to readjust handlebars, still wobbles! Need to go back again!

My 2 cts.

At the advice of Scott and Sonny I had the front tubes serviced and new head bearings installed to try to reduce, if not eliminate, a hands off and high acceleration or sudden decel wobble my R3 had developed. The shocks were toast. The original head bearings were in in good condition. My mechanic opted to change them any way since I had a new set and so much of the front was already disassembled. Probably should let Anthony or one of the Seniors test ride it. It feels good to me.

I wonder how many cumulative miles this pack has on their Rockets. If your bike feels funny or suddenly different... STOP, ask your mechanic, ask The Group. Do something about it. All bikes but, specially the Rocket, are like helicopters. They require constant maintenance, specially if your going to ride it fast.

I'v seen the airline pilots ground check their planes like they are Cessnas. Pre-ride check your bike. I know it sounds like over kill but that's what those in the know say. Perhaps, given we have several pilots in our ranks, we can come up with a realistic but adequate list, like in the airplanes.

I hope you heal well and ride another day.

bent rim?

Sorry to hear that, but glad that you escaped to tell the story.

Check rear wheel bearings (all 3) and swing arm bushings. Had a bad rear wheel bearing cause a front end wobble a few years back.

Get a laser wheel alignment if possible, check to make sure swing arm forks and wheels are aligned. Make sure both fork tubes are the exact same height above the top clamp. Adjust your head bearings to remove slack. I know a guy with an R3 that had these issues with a new bike which started head shaking 12 months after purchase. Fork tubes were different heights, triple clamps/forks were not aligned and head bearings were too loose. New tyres did not fix the problem, there was a bit of work getting it just right. A sad state of affairs for the dealer to deliver a new R3 in that condition.

Yup, I had a scare once and when I got home my rear tire was under 25 lbs, I think I had a nail in it.

A lot of the time it's not the front end that's the problem, it's in the back. Adjust the rear shock pretension higher (stock one or two clicks). See if that changes where the wobble starts. If no change likely the front end, it changed it's likely the back end.
