From Tiger to Roadster?

That bmw scooter

The bmw scooter above is a C1 I think.. since discontinued some years ago. However, people who have them, hang on to them.

Personally I wouldnt have one because they act like a sail when its windy (what, crap weather in the UK? as if!?)

BMW are now going to release an electric powered variant, called the E1 I believe - due to the massive rise of scooters in direct correlation to the traffic in England.

Also the UK Govt. just released project to roll our tens of thousands of charging points for electric vehicles throughout England.

Seeing as most journeys are under 20 miles in the UK, the range anxiety of people is a bit of a moot point with electric vehicles having ranges now of hundreds of miles - even the land speed record holder electric motorbike Mission 1 has a range of about 150 miles.. not too shabby!

Hmmm servicing a slow combustion engine, with fill ups of £20 every 100 miles or spending £0.05p to fill up something that never needs engine or oil servicing - and has 100% torque at any stage of revs.. and is quicker than petrol, like for like. Difficult one that ;):p

Good luck on the commute - rather you than me on the rocket in summer ;)

Occasionally fine, but its overkill and not practical as a commuter.

But hey, its a new toy - I get that - and I have no doubt I will be like that for a little while too with my one.. But I must say, its just crap compared to a scooter on a like for like basis as a daily workhorse. That is not what it is designed for of course!

Remember one thing cheekgrin, and this is not meant in a mean way or anything, but most of us did not buy the Rocket to save on gas. We try to get as good a shot at gas mileage as we can but most of us do not have any illusions about getting 40, 50 or 60 miles to the gallon, not when it is so fun to twist the throttle like we are prone to do.

Riding in the UK, I agree, must be a challenge and having been to London several times I know what you mean by the traffic, but I would imagine a Rocket owner in the UK lives for the moment when he is finally free of that traffic and eventually gets out to that open road and finally is set free or at least as free as your traffic cameras allow.

Enjoy that new Roadster when you get it. To symphatize with you a little I can see why if you live in the city you would leave the Rocket parked and take a scooter instead. But for the poor(?) guy who only has the Rocket I imagine he will suck it up and ride it regardless.

Agree

I do agree with you, but when a scooter costs about 1-2k sterling (one of my mountain bikes cost a fair bit more than that!), and costs a quarter of the rocket 3 to run, from my perspective its a no brainer as a commuting proposition.

That takes nothing away from your point, I do agree - we live for cracking open the throttle a bit and an open road.

Dont really find that in the whole of the South East of England for very long sadly - its just too rammed full of people. Including the 5 odd million or so immigrants over the last administration - all with various standards of driving (not necessarily our standards!!).

We are approaching a population the size of Russia, in a country less than a tenth the size. We have more than the population of France in a country half the size. I could go on, but things have changed here, and not for the good - every road journey I have taken outside London has resulted in a traffic jam of late, and I wished I had a bike (or maxi scooter) with luggage and cruise control to take care of that!

Well....you could always immigrate/move over here...of course you would have to drive on the "correct" side of the road. We are known to have an ocassional "open road" lying somewhere around in this country of ours.

Ha!

Well that would be a pleasure, but most of the planet by weight of numbers of people drives on the left ;) not that it makes any difference!

Am happy driving on any side of the road - even the middle (as I get older lol)..

Got any spare green cards, and Sandra Bullock's mobile?:D

When i did the knowledge of London i used the Honda C90 and i rode that little bike
for 2years and it never missed a beat. At a guess i would say i did about 5000 miles
on it..constantly riding around and across london. At the time i had a 1340 evo Fatboy
which i really liked and i always found myself doing trips in town ie visiting family and
friends on the little honda..it was just so easy to get the little cub out and go.
Also i was never worried about it when i left it parked.
I have always seen my big bikes as a purely pleasure thing and i don't know if i would
like to ride the Rocket in and around london every day. I think it might just take the edge of it.. i always look forward to riding the Rocket and it gives me a buzz and a sense of escapism and i wouldn't want to lose that. So if i had to commute in and
around london..i would definitely get a scooter and one with a bit of poke.

To Chris

Hi, mate. I am a buell Ulysses owner who is sekking up and leaving London for the Algarve where I'll buy a Rocket Roadster in matt black. In terms of luggaga this will be my set up. Baglux harness and tang bag, sissy bar over which I'll put my 1996 Ventura Bike Pack (62 litres) and a rack to take an Ortlieb bag. Maybe footboards but no screen as 80-90 MPH is enough for me. Nick

Hey...

I do recommend the screen, even a short one.. makes a huge difference, believe me. What about the sports one? I got the Summer one and it is 30 seconds to bolt on or bolt off - and it is the difference between a pleasant motorway speed ride and a very tiring one...:D

Hiya..

Check with the Jack Lilley website for most parts, I think the shortie one is approx £100ish pounds, the summer one about £180 and the full Touring one about £200+?

There are aftermarket ones, particularly the fly screen, which can come in carbon fibre.

To be honest, flyscreens dont do a lot - little bit, but the Summer screen is a very good compromise indeed. And a very very big difference once over 40mph - very noticeably so.

Worth every penny that.
