Phil: Happy to hear that you made it thru your pucker factor moment without eating asphalt or becoming a cabob. Those moments seem to await us, eventually.
I am in agreement that the Exedra Max looks to have a usable life of 7,500 with my riding style as well And extremely abrasive roads with a very high aggregate content. . Not that I am a peg dragger, but 99% of my miles are doubled up and full load. Fully geared up, I tip the scales around 330lb and the GF is around 120. So, with full bags and full trunk, we are close to load cap, always. Thank god for 440HD's set to full preload.
However, I have had 2 loss of traction moments with the Max. Mine happened at slower speeds, wider turn with a good deal of chip seal (gravel) involved. But, I also had several of the same types of moments with the Metz thru the years. My perceived differences between the two, is that the MAX has a longer recovery time to regain traction in those situations. Maybe 50% longer, but it is still less then a second. This is just a seat of the pants feel. Did you experience the same?
But, I am a changing out the MAX at 7,500 miles and like you, could baby it for another 1,000 if I wanted to. The Metz I would switch at 4,500miles, but the chicken strip would be bare and I could see steel. But, until something better comes along., the Max and Commander combo is still the best for me.
The improved handling is amazing and even if the Max was more $$$$ then the Metz 880. I would still go MAX.

Yes, I believe that the difference in the recovery time is attributable to the difference between the two tires compositions, the Metz being the softer of the two. In my experience a softer, "grippier" compound may recover faster, but that also has a tendency for the tire to "bite in" or hook back up with the pavement a bit too aggressively at times and that can cause troubles of its own for certain riders. With the Max, when it did break traction or slide a bit, I found that kind of going with it, i.e., not overly or too aggressively reacting to the situation allowed the tire to find its way back on its feet somewhat more naturally.
Jeeze, I hope that makes some sense , since it was hard to verbally describe what I have felt in such circumstances. The Max just gives me a more secure sense when ridden out towards the edge of its performance envelope than the Metzeler generally did.

Well I got rid of the Bridgestone Exedra on the front day before yesterday and went back to an Avon Cobra. The BS seemed OK but really didn't wear all that well - plus I didn't much like the look of it. Yesterday it bucketed down and it's not my favourite time to be on a brand new tyre but I have to say the Avon reminded me why I like it so much. Great pairing with the Exedra Max on the back I reckon.

After my forced change to the Avon front in Sydney on the way back from Hervey Bay, I must say I am quite happy with it. Haven't had the chance to see what it is like in the wet yet (that will be the real test) but it seems good not quite as fast turning as the Shinko but then I should have to worry about it delaminateing either
