Very interesting discussion. Like you, 1olbull, I had no idea the BT earphones were a thing. Had I known I might have experimented with a set before my recent purchase of the Sena Impulse modular helmet. For past couple decades I used Sena comms that attached to the side of my 3/4 helmets with speakers mounted in my helmets. Sound was ok but I always hoped for better someday. Recently learning of the Sena full coverage modular helmet with Harmon Kardon speakers was spendy at $600.00 for me but less than half the cost of a Shoei Neotech modular at 900 bucks plus the Sena comm 3 system had to be installed for another 3 or 4 hundred bucks. Anyway, I am very happy with the Impulse with the built-in Sena 3 comm system, speakers are fantastic, connectivity via BT with my phone or mp3 player is great, the mesh, intercom and FM radio, etc., functions are great as well. I have no problem with road noise or bike noise when scooting along at my 70-80 mph habit. When needing to talk to someone at a stop sign who doesn't have comms I just flip open the helmet, mute my music and chit chat with no problem, despite my 76 year old deaf ears. At least they match my fading memory.
