I need to replace the battery in my R3T and Looking at the empty spot under the seat where the air cleaner once was I have been kicking around the idea of 2 batteries in series. Any thought's good/ bad/ indifferent ?

hmmm...some others have done it.

A cheaper solution would be to upgrade the negative battery cable. It makes a big difference.

For a little more assurance, upgrading the starter motor is another option. Very, very easy to do.

DO NOT WIRE THEM IN SERIES. That would be a 24V battery. Bye Bye Electronics.

In Parallel - OK - But unless you have starting issues - why bother? - Just fit a Good AGM battery.

I am a fan of LiFePO4 (I've even built my own) batteries BUT I'm convinced that they always do what folk expect.

Senior moment with the wiring in series, I just looked it and still got it backwards.

No issues really, just once in a great while it seemed the starter would grunt a little when it is cold in the morning. That would be the only reason.

So please explain the upgrade to the starter motor and negative cable.

Thanks
Curt

Negative Battery Cable mod:

I went with it all two batteries, extra ground cable and larger starter motor. now all I have t do is fix the darn ignition switch. Mine has finally started acting up after 7 years.

The only reson why I use two batteres is I do run a lot more electronics on mine. Olenty have the OEM systlem and function well. I think its like the lottery only instead of winning you loose :D

A standard battery should be more than enough for the standard starter motor on a standard engine IF the cables are all tight and connections CLEAN. If in doubt sandpaper. And assuming the battery is properly charged.

Better fatter - lower impedance cables may help. They certainly wont harm.

There is one advantage to wiring a SMALL LiFePO4 in parallel. It acts as a trickle charger and keeps the "normal" battery at peak level. In fact I've seen something on a site dedicated to emergency vehicles in small towns where this was suggested.

The other option is just to keep the bike attached to a battery tender.

On my R3 I do the latter - On my Guzzi I have a home built monster (560CCA) LiFePO4 that feeds the starter and a Motobatt AGM for the other bits. Each has an independent earth - The positives are linked by a 70 amp cable. It's MASSIVE OVERKILL and since I changed the starter motor (it was 35 years old) totally unnecessary.
