Hi There,

I have recently purchased an immaculate 06 Rocket III Classic with only 16,000KM. It is a great bike to ride, however I have some potential issues that I would like to get all of your opinions on.

The first one is when changing gears, the gear enganges with quite a clunk. It is nothing I have experienced on any of my other bikes being a Harley and some Yamahas. I just don't know if this is a normal thing the Rocket's or Triumph's in general do.

Also the second issue is that I can hear a scrubbing noise from the front wheel, it almost sounds like the wheel bearing. I have heard this on another bike and was told it was nothing but I wasn't convinced then and It has me slightly concerned.

Are either of these to be concerned about?

Thanks for any help.

Mine is "Clunking" when accelerating slowly, but if I am accelerating in "fun mode" then the "clunk" is gone.
I purchased my 2005 Rocket with 7500 km on it and it did it then.

Don't know about the scrubbing noise, but I don't think any bike should have such a noise.

..welcome aboard Dan..the gears shouldn't be clunking any more loudly than your harley or your yamis..does it shift hard?..if not, it's probably ok..maybe the clutch needs adjusting..as for the front wheel scrubbing noise, jack the bike up and give the wheel a spin..you should be able to tell then..might be just the brake pads dragging a little..could be a bearing..stop by the house in the morning, we'll take a look..

Another welcome to the forum, Dan!!

That rkt88's a good bloke, isn't he????? What an offer, eh?

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. I will jack the bike up and see what the deal is with this noise. The more I think of it, the more I think it is a warped disc. Using the front brakes, I can feel the disc grabbing a little harder, but have no feedback through the brake lever. I guess it wouldn't have to be much though to feel it. I was hoping it was just something greasy on the disc that may come off with brake cleaner but everything seems to be pointing to the discs at the moment, that's for sure.

rkt88, thanks for the offer, however I am a really terrible swimmer!

Make it easy on yourself. When you get the front wheel in the air use a flat blade screwdiver to push the brake pads (both sides on both sides) away from the disk. Then spin the wheel. You can then set a fixed point (like a WD-40 spray nozzle hose) near the brake rotor and watch the disk in relation to the hose tip to see if there is any "in and out" in relation to the fixed point (same concept as wheel truing). If the amount of "play" is very small (or none) then I suspect your brake fluid needs changed. If the scrubbing noise is heard without brake pads near the rotors its your bearings.

I just put EBC "HH" pads on the front of mine. They have a lot of metal in them and make a sound sorta like metal on metal, but it's a constant sound.

Was the R3 sat for a while without being used? - sometimes the pads bind slightly onto the disc if left sat idle for a goodly while. This can take a while to rub off
