Clicking Noise in the Rear Wheel

ALL your symptoms are EXACTLY like mine were especially the lower torque range thingy!
You NEED new rear wheel bearings, Morris - trust me!

UPDATE -
Glad you got it fixed, Morris.
Fortunately for me I got to mine earlier and avoided that hub gall.
Hope the new balls last for you. I installed my third set at 40K (5K more so far) and watch them suckers like a hawk.

Nothin' worse than ball problems

Removal is not too bad. Heat the hub around the bearing bore to expand the aluminum. It expands twice as far as the steel race so it will stress the locking compound. At about 400 deg F the Loc-Tite will release. Then knock it out from the far side.

Now if you use 640 Sleeve Retainer on similar metals, consider the installation permanent.

I have a 13 roadster and have recently started hearing some noises from the back wheel. I thought maybe a stone had gotten into the rim somewhere.

There is NO noise while backing up. I am trying to attach a video with the sound. Is there a way to do that?

Put your video somewhere else on the web (YouTube, Dropbox, Photo Bucket, etc) and then post a link here.

@KDog Bone that sounds sickeningly familiar. Almost identical to the noise I had. Well not my bike, but the one that this thread is about anyway. Were I you I would remove the rear wheel and give the bearings a look see

Thanks! that will be the first thing I do. Appreciate you taking a listen and the input!

All these recent wheel bearing threads got me nervous........... my 05 with 36,000 has not been making any noises, BUT - with the 3 sisters ride coming up, I have now installed all new wheel bearings & seals and the new tires are now rolling with "Ride-On" balancer/sealant
Thanks @R3Tex ;)
I feel safe now

Thanks R3Tex,

You were right. I had a mechanic look at it and showed him this thread and here is what I got back:

" Yes, bearing is loose in the wheel as per that forum post. Looks just as the picture does and bearing comes out of wheel with no effort. Bearing feels fine – have cleaned up, center punched and used Loctite on the bearing when installed (as per the post described and I have had to do it on other bikes before as well). Letting it sit now for Loctite to cure till tomorrow before reassembling. "

I don't know what it is going to cost me yet but I am sure it is a LOT less than it would have been if he had had to troubleshoot this thing on his own. Thanks again for the AWESOME info and solutions!

Hey KDB - just a suggestion on my part.... as inexpensive as they are, why not put a new bearing in while its out? if the bearing seat has become larger, there is a reason for it (over torquing maybe?) So it stands to reason that some undue stress has been put on that bearing in spite of the fact it may "feel fine" Just askin :whitstling:
