Cam Cover Gasket

Funny, sometimes my bike seeps oil on the left side of the engine. I will go for a ride one day and have to wipe the residual oil off, another day no oil! Sometimes I can go for many rides with no oil seeping then Bam- oil needs wiping! Seems to be coming from above the throttle bodies. A paper towel and all is well. Easier than trying to get to the cam cover as I still have a the OEM intake setup.

Would probably put it down to not being correctly torqued when first assembled or if the cover has been off some time recently, amazing how going by the correct factory torque settings will stop an oil leak, most guys are like bulls in a china shop when it comes to a wrench/spanner

It is more than likely the oil tank leaking. Mine would do the same thing as you mentioned. I loosened the oil tank and moved it around a little trying to push on the back of the tank so the tubes leading from the tank would go more down into the engine... then retightened. Hasn't leaked anymore. I bought new o-rings for those tube things but never put them on since it quit leaking.

Maybe I just like to throw away money. Not only did we buy a new gasket for the twenty thousand mile tune up but also the seals for around the bolts. Had A bonneville and did the same whenever I removed the cam cover, never had a leak. Since the bike is stock went ahead and bought all the seals that the manual says replace while performing the valve clearance check. :):):):):)

I done the same for my 1st valve check at 28k miles ,still got them in the garage! Maybe use them this next check at 55k miles.

There has been a few Roadsters that the gasket has blew out around the cam cover. You might be able to see it bulging out if it has blown. Look around the perimeter of the cover... you'll see the gasket. I wouldn't get rid of the bike if it is just the cam cover gasket.

Thx. Yes it's as you described. Bludging out of the 1st cylinder. My question now is how often have people replaced this gasket? I put about 20K on a yr.

20,000 miles in twelve months and no leaks. Plan on taking my time and being very careful with the new gasket when reinstalling the cam cover after valve clearance check. I believe some shops do not take the time to insure that the gasket is seated correctly and after a couple of thousand miles it leaks. A small amount of blue locktight on the bolts along with proper torque technique works wonders on rubber gaskets. ;)
