2006 Rocket 3
I have a 2006 rocket that had some transmission work done about a year ago. The only problem with the repair is that they didn’t entirely reinstall my cam chain tensioner. (I’ll leave a picture below). Forgive me if my terminology is off, but they left out the rod with the head that goes through the center of the assembly. So in other words there’s just a hole in the side of my motor. Due to starting a new job in Texas, I haven’t been home very much since it was repaired and therefore I haven’t ridden the bike basically at all. I might’ve put 50 miles or so on it since. And along with that I just didn’t really worry about this issue because it wasn’t being ridden.

Now for the actual question. I need my bike 100% within the week because I’m riding it out to Houston very soon. I already have a new tensioner, but no shops can do the installation before I need to leave. Is it worth it to do it myself? And how would I go about doing it?

Thank you!!

yes
you need a caliper or maybe a pensil and measure from the outside base to the outside base of the out side of the adjuster valve. not the spring depth of the valve.

Ok so I installed the spring and screw cap plus some various bolts that the dealer just left off of the bike, (great job guys), but I couldn’t start it as the battery is dead. So I tried jumping it off but I think the starter is drawing a ridiculous amount of voltage when I hit the start button. So I’m picking up a new battery tomorrow and hopefully she’ll fire up.

My theroy is that maybe when they worked that they probably left it the way they found it so i am thinking that it still has some adjustment on it
and probably should be ok.
that is the reason i wanted the measurement. to see where it is at.
does this sound reasonable to you?
He said he rode it 50 miles or so, and no telling how many starts or attempted starts. With no adjuster pieces installed I wouldn't take the chance, but that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.

I don't know what to say
I wanted to see where that adjuster valve was before the spring was installed but after the spring was installed we don't know if damage was done or not.
I guess you have a few options if
It jumped timming it might have bent valves
Pull the front cover and check the timing
Or just go for it
If the valves are bent then it will turn over real fast because compression is gone.

I started the bike, it was running perfectly fine for about 10 minutes. Once it was warmed up a bit, I took it down the street, I went down about a quarter mile, turned around a came back. In the way back it started bogging and stuttering around 3k rpm and then shut off. Now when I crank it, it doesn’t start, sounds horrendous and is now seemingly f*****. I can’t put an audio clip in here and I don’t quite know how to describe the sound. It almost sounds like it has no compression so i’m assuming yall were probably right and it jumped timing.

I think that you should have listen to Gerald.
i guess i should have mention that a bad timming chain out of position will also not have compression.
possible if the valve in the adjuster was missing that might have let the spring go inside the motor and made a mess.
1st thing is to take off the cap and check on the spring and valve and repair/replace timming chain.
take pictures .
i would advise not to do anything with out checking with the pros on this r3 site (the ones that don't listen have the most problems and spend the most money)

I wouldn't do anything until I had verified the cam/valve timing was correct and timing chain was shimmed to specs.. After this is determined you can start the process of starting the engine or trouble shooting. Don't want to compound / multiply a problem. Can always trailer to Texas and make repairs there.

Yeah I definitely should’ve listened to yall, but whats done is done. I’m not nearly equipped enough to do this myself so if you happen to know of any specialists or good shops in Texas or in Georgia I’ll end up letting them do it. I’m sure as hell not taking it back to the shop that rebuilt my transmission.

Sorry they fooled with the chain adjuster, their mistake/ignorance will cause worry/concern for you until back together and you're riding. Best to you going forward.
