OK, here's your valuable gift for guessing correctly. A true Triumph Rocket III motorcycle joke.

A guy is riding along I-10 when he pulls alongside a cattle carrier.

One of the cows says, "Holy cow! Look at the size of the motor on that thing. It must be 140 cubic inches!"

The other cow says, "That's bigger than a Honda Civic engine!"

(A LITTLE MORE)

And the Rocket rider looks over and says, "Wow! Talking cows!"

I just don't know what I'm gonna do. I'll see what the problem is then explore my options.

I want so badly to like this bike. But I have lost faith in it. It's not dependable. Never has been. I bought it as a "touring" bike and that's what I've used it for. But it has consistently let me down at the worst possible times.

Today was the 6th time it's been on the back of a flatbed.

I just don't know...

Sounds like it's time to make lemon aid.

I believe there might be a lemon law that I believe I would pursuit there is no reason for such trouble. Best of luck the rest of the trip and I hope your truck will have air conditioning.

That's exactly how old mine was and exactly what the symptoms were when the ignition switch failed me on the highway ... not that I'm guessing or anything, but it was July, Hot, rush hour and I was mad as hell. I shook the bike like an orphan in foster care (Politically incorrect analogy) and it restarted after an hour. A week in detention (dealership) and that was the end of it. I sure hope your real dealer can fix whatever is wrong.

K-Mart and U-Haul sucks ... that will make for a long trip home, sorry.

U Haul does suck, but what else can I do? I'm 840 miles from home.

My brother offered to drive out here from San Diego, load the Rocket into the back of his truck and head back. That isn't the best option, but...

The U Haul (10' or 14' truck) is estimated to cost between $775 and $810 for 4 days and 900 miles (their quote, not mine).

Sure, I'll try to get Triumph to cough up some reimbursement, but I really just want a bike that works. (Too much to ask, right?)

I am open to options here, guys.

I'm going to scour these threads and the Net for info on lemon laws pertainig to Triumph bikes.

I'd gladly accept another bike (one that works), but this is what I'm guessing: Triumph is well aware of the problems affecting these bikes but refuses to recall and replace/repair them, opting instead to wait for us to break down in the most inconvenient of situations, have us tow it to their shop, then they'll do the work as warranty (or out of warranty) work.

Bad business, but it saves them $$$.

Anyone successfully received a new bike or full repayment from Triumph per a lemon law?

Well it sounds like you will have time on your hands driving back home, I suggest you spend some of that time ruining the week of Triumph USA's customer service reps. Nothing is fresher in your mind than during the trip home in tow. I think the guy's name is Peter.

Remember the "squeaky wheel" analogy.

geez...sorry to hear about all the troubles.

If I remember right, you did a usa4corners trip last year or the year before. Then it seems like you had an accident of some type. Now you are on another big trip and all these issues have kicked in. Could something have not been repaired right since your off?

From the sounds of it, it really smells of a bad ignition switch. I haven't seen a switch from a Touring but I assume that it is the same or similar to the Std/Cls/Rdstr. If the switch can be pulled, remove the lower cover to see if a solder has come loose or broken entirely.

I had the ignition switch replaced about a year ago. I understand that's a common problem with the R3Ts.

I haven't had any new mechanical work done recently. I had an oil change and "once over" right before I left, just to make sure everything was working OK.

I do think the extreme heat (107-113 locally) was a factor in both breakdowns (Jersey and Texas). That's what my dealer initially thought.

Anyone routinely ride their Touring in 100+ temperatures for extended periods of time? I'm definitely not a Home to Starbucks rider and I put a lot of miles on very quickly.

Ah, who knows...
