cold start issues

Don't know if this helps at all, but I have a rocket classic 2009 and when the temp drops to freezing it only cranks for 3 seconds. If I put a boost starter (kicks out 100 amps on cranking to assist the battery) it fires up. been to dealer on many occasions (under warranty) 3 batteries and 1 starter later still no joy. we took an amp reading on a new rocket and it took 260 amps to turn it over, took a reading on mine and it was 405 amps (bit excessive). they have now stripped my engine down and putting in new barrels (sleeves) so will be interesting to see what its like when I get it back (been in for a month) theory is its a tight engine, and when its cold it makes it even tighter. will keep you posted when I get it back.

You must have been too easy on her during break-in .... maybe she needed a good thrashing early in life to keep her in line. lol

I was perusing the 'Net trying to find some battery info on the R3 when I stumbled upon a few threads here on y'alls forum. I'm trying to help a friend of mine who has an R3. He's having problems with his second OEM battery, and after reading a few threads, I'm going to recommend that he purchase the Odyssey 625 with the Odyssey charger. He doesn't ride it very much, but if he can keep from having to charge it all the time, he'll be more likely to ride it more.

I'm sure I'll be back for more info when I need it...looks like a great site.

Don't forget to look into the tray modification for the PC625, it's a little involved (it was the first thing on the assembly line ) but allows the battery to sit down in the tray all the way.

Yeah, I'll either do that or file the fins down. As far as the R3 goes, I love the bike. I've only sat on them at the dealer, but I suspect that I'll be able to ride his bike once I get it up and running!

I'm pretty happy with my VTX, though. I turned mine into a bagger and travel all over the country on it!

Ah, but R3's are just torquey stock ... the real fun comes when the 7% power reduction is removed from the first three gears and she's allowed to breath with exhaust and triple K&N's, then tuned with extra fuel. Thats when they become true MONSTERS!

Yeah, just about all bikes in stock form are de-tuned to meet the EPA emissions regulations. But open them up, and they're totally different. I'm more familiar with what's been done with the VTX (specifically the 1800), and when you add some nice "go-go juice" (turbo or nitrous), you get some crazy-fast bikes running on the streets.

I can't wait to ride the R3...I know it'll be a night-and-day difference with my v-twin 1300.

has anybody removed the battery for storage and found the ECU adversely affected when reconnected??

Well, my friend decided to go with a Cycle-Tron II 310CCA battery that he bought locally from Intertstate Batteries. He's been dealing with them for years and decided to try the higher CCA battery. I installed it this past Saturday, and it took about 4-5 seconds of holding the start button in before it fired up (which I expected after reading about that here). I geared up while it warmed up a bit, and off I went. As I pulled out of his driveway, the bike just didn't feel right while turning. I suspected his tire pressure was low, so I slowly rolled through our subdivision to my house to air up the tires. The front was at 10 PSI and the rear at 20 PSI, so I inflated them up to 42 PSI. Now the fun begins...

HOLY CRAP! The torque on this beast is incredible. I took it out for only 15-20 minutes, but I did get it up to 110 a couple of times pretty quickly! The second time I was accelerating through the gears, I crossed a spot in the road where a section of the road had been cut out for utility lines that had recently been buried, and I spun the rear tire while crossing that section. I almost had to change my shorts after that...

I have a new-found appreciation for the R3 and am looking forward to taking it out more for my friend. He's out of the country for about a month, but said I could take it out if I wanted to. I may show up this Wednesday night at our weekly Meet 'n Greet and tell everyone I got rid of the X and bought this bike. Ha ha!

That just may become a reality for you; the more you ride and get accustomed to it....
