Air filter reeks of gasoline

Well. started at the source under the tank and instant suspicion on the connector there, it was black. Which means road dust had been sticking to it more than the surrounding areas. Wiped it with my finger and it was a mixture of old gasoline and muck, unmistakable smell. Can't be a huge leak as there is no other sign of it, but possibly with a brimming full tank and road vibration it leaks and seeps back and down into the air filter box.

Gonna have to check the shop manual to see how much it should be torqued and see if it needs to be tightened.

If you have corn gas like we do in the USA don't worry about the leak. Corn gas is barely volatile enough for our motors to run. If you have real gas, fix it right away, that stuff still has some power!!! Lol

Hah yeah ours does burn, even though they insist on putting ethanol in it for no **** good reason. It isn't ecologically friendlier because you burn more gas as it has far less energy in it than gasoline, and the sheer damage and stupidity of growing all those crops just to convert to ethanol makes it a total wash, if not worse for the planet than the undiluted stuff. Not to mention the damage it does to the engines over time... and how it makes the fuel hygroscopic so it literally sucks in moisture from the surrounding air... whoever came up with the ethanol-in-gas idea was a moron.

Anyway, as I got the rest of the air ducting out I found that the part directly under the tank had dark stains underneath, and the entire plenum box also stank of gasoline. So I clearly have a noticeable leak that needs addressing. Did buying a Ramair filter just save my life, or at least my bike from a viking funeral?

So I'm finally getting around to ripping out my air ducting and installing my Ramair filter, and when I got to the point where I pulled the air filter, the whole thing reeked of old gasoline. It wasn't wet now, but clearly it had gotten a dose at some point. I can find nothing under the seat or in the gas lines that appear wet at the moment and I certainly haven't noticed anything dripping... however, I did drop the bike on its side at one point when I fumbled a take-off.

Since the air filter is behind the engine, it would seem plausible that any fuel leaking under there would fly back into it, but... the air ducting is pretty well sealed all the way to the carbs and the bike is otherwise dry under there as I said.

Could fuel have flowed backwards all the way form the carbs to the air filter?

Hmm. Either way, glad I'm taking that out, the last thing you want is something gas-soaked on motorcycle. One spark from the battery which is right adjacent to that and we could have been talking "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" time...

Only good thing about corn gas is it keeps the intake systems clean.
