30 Amp Fuse Keeps blowing out

Hello all,

I have a Triumph Rocket 3 Roadster 2018. Recently my 30 amp main fuse keeps blowing out. Headlights will flicker, dash lights will turn on and off. And when I turn the bike off, it wont turn back on if I try.

The battery I have is a:

NOCO Lithium NLP20, Group 20, 600A Lithium LiFePO4 Motorcycle Battery, 12V 7Ah​



I’ve had this batter for about a year and has caused no issues.

I spoke to a mechanic and he told me to get a multi meter and get readings on it. These are the readings:

Bike off: 13.3

Bike On ( Idle): went from 14.10 then rode to 14.42

Bike On (2000rpm): 14.42, occasionally went to 14.43 but only for a blink of an eye.

The mechanic said that the battery could be overcharging but the Noco battery’s are smart batteries and usually good on that front.

He also says that the regulator could be faulty, or that maybe the 30amp fuses that I’m using are cheap. And that I should try:

Bussmann Fuses.

I also checked the battery connectors, they’re nice and tight, nothing is wiggling.

Does anyone have any ideas of where I should look? Are the meter levels normal?

it sounds like you have a direct short.
if it was my bike i would buy a breaker fuse 30 amp so you don't go through a lot of fuses.
now i would make sure that you have a diagram of the fuses so that you know which ones to put where they belong.
pull all the fuses then replsce the 30 amp with the 30 amp breaker fuse (this may cause the breaker to go on and off) then replace the other fuses one at a time
to try to figure what circuit is the culprit
i am leaning on a short in the lights did you replace the headlights and do anything with the parking lights?
 
I replaced the headlights back in 2018 when I first got the bike. I haven’t done anything new as of late.

However, sometimes the headlights will fog up from the inside. Then fades away. Been doing that since I replaced the headlights.

How will replacing each fuse one by one help me find out which one is which? I’ve never done anything electrical with the bike before, and I will I tell which is the culprit?
 
Actually nevermind I figured what you mean, I place each fuse one by one, if the breaker trips while putting in the fuse, that circuit is the culprit
 
Look to see if any additional aftermarket wiring is attached directly to the battery posts......we all have been GUILTY of attaching accesories to our bikes without adding a fuse inline, First culprit i'd look for....Good Luck

That is correct we are trying to narrow down the area/circuits where the problem is.
when some people change the headlights sometimes there is not a place to put the parking light so they remove the bulb and then sooner or later the two terminals get together and creates a short to ground and will blow fuses. you must have a bulb to hold the terminals apart! or cut and tape the wires/one wire to break the circuit.

Few more things you might check. Ground wire somewhere could be bad, from rectifier to battery ground, but im leaning towards a ground rubbing broke or burnt ground connector, the ground from rectifier to battery connector could be burnt.
 
does the fuse blow as soon as you switch the ignition on or can you ride for a while before it blows.
 
Point of clarification, when you state the 30 amp main fuse is blowing, is it fuse #11 or #2 in the fuse holder? I'm assuming it is #11.

Regarding removing all the fuses then installing them one at a time to track down the grounded circuit... the main fuse is a 30 amp and is in spot #11. It feeds the 30 amp fuse in spot #2 for the ignition switch circuit but tees off before that going to the regulator. It also feeds the 20 amp Engine Management fuse #6 to which I wouldn't worry about since it isn't blowing. The lower amp rated fuses should blow before the main 30 amp so pulling them to track down the ground/shorted circuit shouldn't really help. I would install a 30 amp breaker fuse like Turbo stated and check the wiring going to the regulator, starter solenoid relay, and any other starter switch circuits... Check the wiring diagram.
