Shockingly, the vmax OEM rear wheel is only 3.5" wide, so the maxers make it wider and taller so that it will take a modern radial tire.
The more adventerous guys also notch out the swingarm where the tire meets and then reinforce it elsewhere so that they can get a respectably wide tire on the back.
I was looking into it so that I could put a car tire in the rear of the max, but it's not cheap. I was looking at about $1,500.00 to get a modified wheel, which kind of detracted from the cool factor a bit.
Also notching out the swingarm is no big issue either,the Vmax guys have been doing it for years.

I have a 245/50-16 federal S595. The drive shaft case/cover is already scalloped... the stock tire would rub if it wasn't. I had to remove the Rivco chrome drive shaft cover, the front retainer spring was rubbing the tire. There is maybe 1/4 inch clearance. MAYBE. So, I can get a tire that measures 9.8 inches section width.
