I have noted, after removing the evaporative emission plumbing, if I overfill the tank, the fuel ends up running on the pavement underneath the bike. So I've had to calibrate my eyeball as to where the top fill line really is -- and in my case -- seems to be a millimeter or two above the fuel tab.
Fuel tabs are common in aviation, where max useful load of the aircraft is a combination of fuel and cargo, and if one wants more cargo, one has the option of filling the tanks just to the tabs (which is about 60% fuel) - gasoline is typically quoted as 6 lb/gallon.
