I am currently in Oklahoma City...I went to the Triumph dealer in Bethany,
and they said that my problem is common. I should let let clutch out a little bit, and then first should fully engage. So, that seemed to answer the questions I had. They seem to be more knowledgeable that the shop in Jacksonville....

'07 with 11,000+miles...gets smoother every day. Only "problem" I have is sometimes I miss going up into second 'cause I'm so used to the other gears needing just the slightest bump. I must give my 1st to 2nd an affirmative shift. Other than that...sweet. 8)

I have normaly had to go into first slipping the clutch when stopped or slipping into first as I am stopping then into neutral. Forceing into gear will bend something as the load put on the forks by the drum is quite high and the gearbox is not of a syncro mesh type as fitted to cars ( more weight and more space needed for one of these). I find the box to be noisey as do thers on this forum, I put it down to the engine being very cavenous and not haveing the gearbox being half emersed in oil as most other bikes are.
This is just my own opinion and open to any one to disagree, this what we are here for.

I had problems early on. A small spring was upgraded and probably would have solved everything, BUT I made a big fuss, made them tear it apart, and on my own dime, bought the 2'nd gear and syncro that have the later part number. (The spring, which can be replaced without cracking the cases was all I should have had done!) It worked great for a couple of thousand miles, then I missed second while trying to pull a fat wheelie (going into second, there were Harley's involved, it's not worth repeating). The subsequent teardown and rebuild went back to the original parts number 2'nd gear and syncro, but still with the updgraded spring. The bike shifts fine, has been to NY and back, about 10,000 miles since it was worked on, no problems at all.
And by the way, my Hodaka Ace 90 was a constant mesh tranny, (very clever really) and the Rocket three is MOST DEFINITELY NOT a constant mesh transmission.
