Oh it should have been, and I'm sure it was, just drawing the conclusion that since the tech has installed the update kit on a 2006, at least he will be familiar with the guts of an R3 motor, so it won't be hist 1st time at least.

Another plus not, just got a quote back on undercutting the 2nd gear output gear and the dog gear that mates with 2nd, $175.00 for the labor. Should ensure once your in gear, you stay in gear! Questionable decision to not do it undercut on all gear out of the factory....

So you think the update kit is in the new ones & yours just didn't hold?

Yes tex, I think it was a combination of things:

o Couple missed shifts when breaking in the bike in from not being positive with the shift lever, its so smooth I was being gentle with the shifter as is normal on a sportbike. My rocket needs a positive kick into 2nd from 1st to ensure it fully seats, not sure if this is normal or an effect of a miss-assembled tranny from the factory, but it's been that way since day 1, so I learned to kick into 2nd positively (not abusively hard, but positive).

o I have had a couple of false neutrals before while shifting, didn't ever think much of it, as every bike I have ever ridden has done it once or twice when ringing them out hard.

o Some hard 1-2 shifts lofting the front end over the course of the bikes life.

o Then add in an inadvertent shift right after the quickshifter was installed from 1st to 2nd at full power around 5500RPM (quite a violent event to say the least).

A week or so later, this situation developed, I suspect the 1-2 with the quickshifter was the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak. I've always felt like 2nd gear has too much drive train lash, it has notably more than any other gear as you go on/off throttle, I assumed it was a side effect of having a shaft drive bike, in reality, it may have been that 2nd gear was ****ed from day 1. Another oddity, when in 2nd gear slowing down to a light or something, as I come up to stop, when I pull in the clutch and the back-torque is removed from the tranny there is a clunk that you can hear and slightly feel, every single time, assumed it was normal as it's always done it.



Now I have a sneaking suspicion that it's been "broken" from new after looking back at it lol.

you are correct about the lash movement as with the update on 2nd gear it has every 2nd engagement dog removed.
Hope all goes well with the rebuild and you aren't off the road to long.

Well you guys want to shift without the clutch and that will *** up your trans with one missed shift and thats a fact you dont want to use a quick shifter because again one missed shift will *** up the trans

Well, the bike had a number of missed shifts right from the beginning. Some, where it would go in second and about 5 seconds later pop out, that happened on the test ride even, and I chalked it up to not shifting hard enough.

It's easy to blame the rider for bent forks and such, but I firmly believe this is the culmination of a problem steming all the way back to when the bike was new, and I had been riding around it unwittingly.

Funny thing happened at the dealer this afternoon.

Chatting with one of the sales men trying to figure out if there was an R3 inbound for sales soon. They have one coming, I mentioned trading and he says "Why don't you buy a Harley"... I laughed and said "no thanks, I am addicted to torque" buwahahaha.
