TRANNY PROBLEM DEVELOPING

Re: REPAIR UPDATE

Did you participate in the Output Bearing Problem poll stickied at the top of this forum section?

Sorry about the tranny failure, and I agree, it could have gotten ugly.

Ive got a 05 Rocket and these problems are very worrying.Mines done 5000 miles no problems so far but its not in warranty now and if this problem occurs on mine thered be no way i could afford to have it fixed.>s it time to get rid.

Mine was not obvious either, you really had to get on it, (second gear at 4000 RPM and WOT), and that is when the transmission issues showed up. I had to ask several guys from the dealership to ride it before they noticed it, also because I was not having the problem every single time the bike was ridden. Find out where Miami Dave take his bike for service. You guys should be able to get it taken care of at one of the dealerships in Florida.

FURTHER UPDATE

Now had opportunity to better understand what went wrong in the gearbox.

It Would appear that two thrust washers used in the gearbox have a flat side and a beveled side. It appears that these had been installed the wrong way around on assembly of the gear cluster. This allowed the second gear cog to travel further over on the shaft than required thus grating upon a nearby cog. This caused the gear selection issues.

On speaking to Triumph they hold the view that the problem would likely have "worn" itself away. Mmmm !

OH NO NOT IN FOR REPAIRS AGAIN

Well exactly 3 days and 45 miles later the bikes back at the dealers. A nice "chunking" noise coming from the cambox/rockerbox area.

Awaiting diagnosis and constantly having to chase up dealer to see where they are with at least an inital examination of the cambox area. Noise got progressively worse over a short ride. Stopped bike and shipped it off. Nightmare.................

I'm hoping that it's something or nothing and a cam tensioner or similar but I usually am not that lucky. I'm totally and understandably P***d off with the thing now. It's officially been off the road longer than it's been on. Were these bikes ever meant to be actually "ridden" I wonder. I feel like a test rider for Triumph.

Tell me; does anyone know of anyone who has owned or own a hassle free R3 to date?? Everyone I know appears to have had some form of warranty work done on it and in most cases pretty serious stuff. Gives no confidence in the machine particularly at the point it goes out of warranty.

Will update for reference of fellow owners! Meanwhile back onto my trusty and reliable 89' HD[]

P.S Gearbox is fine now!

Met one tdealer today said had experienced no problems with R3's and had sold quite a few which is comforting and distressing at the same time, as I seem to have got a "rogue" one then. .

My dealer has sold 44 so far... One idle problem, no tranny or bearing issues... I think the problem is more factory QC than anything... Some will be bulletproof not matter what mods... Some will have major issues after short milage... Depends if you were built on a Friday afternoon or day before Holiday...

Tranny 2nd gear problems

I have an 06 Rocket and I have had the 2nd gear problems you describe.
First my shaft bearing disintegrated, (Which had a grinding noise) and once they had fixed that. About 4 weeks after I noticed my 2nd gear was making a clunking noise and then dropping out, the only way I could get round this was to go straight to 3rd.
The selector fork was bent and also 1st and 2nd gear had serious wear marks around the insides, and so the selector was having trouble.
There is a modified selector that Triumph do and it may become standard and cause a recall.
Even the demonstrator they lent me had 2nd gear trouble and also 1st gear problems. So my dealer will be replacing that one as well.
Mine had 9500 kms when it started having problems and the demonstrator bike they lent me had 10000 kms on it.
