TRANNY PROBLEM DEVELOPING

Bike has 1500 miles on clock. Now become aware of difficulties in engaging second gear in that there's a nice little cog grind as the gear is engaged suggesting selector fork/dog or other highly inaccessible component has bent. Not good as full motor strip down is required. Not good on a bike so young (Though it was a demo model but demonstrated no such fault)

I notice that others have experienced second gear probs on down shift when output bearing has deteriorated. Anyone had this issue with second gear on the way up through the gear box?

Is your clutch adjusted as per the manual. It's a little fussy about the exact setting and misadjusted cluth can be a cause of some of the symptoms you describe.

Do you have problems finding Neutral?

I have had both problems, and the clutch cable on MORE than one occasion. It really is sensitive to the correct 1 mm of freeplay. The shift problems in some cases are more serious, and in my opinion are often the result of the springs on the shift detent mechanism not being strong enough. THAT can be fixed WITHOUT pulling the motor apart and in my opinion, (hind sight really is 20-20) should always be done before allowing anyone inside the motor. I had a lot of second gear issues, hopping out of gear briefly, (like a cog slipping, but without any grind, then instantly in mesh again, not like a clutch that slips.) I thought this was the 2'nd gear dogs, but got my motor all apart and found almost no wear whatsover. While apart we also changed the springs. It was perfect afterwards for about 500 miles. Unfortunately 3'rd gear broke after that. Triumph has stood behind everything without any argument at all. I am really impressed by the attitude Triumph has shown, even changing my oil pump to try to ensure no metal particles will remain in the motor after repairs. Eric and Danny are my heros at So Cal Triumph (not to mention the service manager TJ who got it all covered). We now light three small candles in front of their pictures in our house every night.

INTRO AND PROGRESS

Sorry for no intro. Over here in York, UK. Gone back to Triumphs after many years away. Fell out of love with my T140V many years ago. Good to see Triumph have managed to retain a little bit of their history even if it's the frequetly breaking down elements and poor service.

No acknowledgement from Triumph Technicians of my problem being a known issue. Authorised full strip down...Marvellous. Dropped it off at the dealers on the 7th march for work to commence 8th March. Found out on the 10th they're not in a position to touch it until 23rd March. Nice!! Triumph suggest I don't ride it until it's sorted-Nicer still!!

Like the bike, but to screw up with less than 1500 miles on it and then the dealer mess me about, the lustre is wearing off rather quickly. Not the honeymoon we were after!

Will discuss the issues you guys raise with the mechanic doing the job. God willing he'll discover something simple.

Having no problems selecting neutral suggesting it's perhaps a bit more sinister.

Meanwhile...dare I say it ... I'll dig out my 89 springer softail and get that back on the road and wonder why I chopped in my Ultra!

are you having problems with A-1 moto in york? Is Andy still working there?

when I was over there they always treated me right, felt they were in it to please me not just make a buck.

got a lot of great service from them, course that was back when they were in an alley off the side street, guess they got some fancy building now.

GEARBOX AND HOPES

Regulator, Paul

Confirming dealer is not A1 Moto. They have moved to new premises and in fairness they and my other dealer are usually excellent.

How excellent my current dealer is will soon be known as the strip down and repair job starts today. So here's hoping the problem is obvious and it doesen't sit in a hundred pieces for weeks with Triumph scrabbling around trying to find the odd bit here and there to experiment with.

Will post what identified problem is. Should one be identified that is! Feel Im running on faith here. Hard to give the bike to someone else to rip apart when it's so young and moreso when I'm used to picking up the tools and getting on with repairing stuff myself.

Paul (Thetford) This Rocket is a and October 2006. Spoke with Triumph prior to returning bike to dealer. Stated that they didn't know of any particular gearbox issues!

REPAIR UPDATE

Bike now ripped down by Triumph dealer. Seemingly owing to the abscence of /ill fitting of a part in the gearbox/ omitted or ill fitted at the Factory the gearbox needs to be completely changed. Fortunately for me it's a warranty job (Box alone over £1100.00).

I have to say it disturbs me greatly that such an event could even happen in such a critical area of manufacturing. Thank god Triumph don't make Aeroplane engines!
