Paul . Have you considered mismatched crown radii? - Reason being I suffer exactly the same condition and I wonder if this is part of the issue - in addition to the rather large discrepancy in widths.
I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean here Chris.
I've always just put this down to a lot of weight on that front tire when braking, or powering through/out of a corner.
When I'm "going for it" as soon as I see the exit of the corner, whilst still cranked over, I'll really pour on the power and allow this to drive me out of the corner, this, I think tends to sledge the front end and it's this that wears the side of the Tire.
As the bike becomes more vertical, the weight is lifted off the front end, hence minimal wear in the middle.
Not sure that I'm explaining this correctly.
