I would make the KZ1000 eat dirt on my XS1100 it's a good bike for the eighty's and not a bad bike for today. My R3 is so much a better bike then the XS1100 but I still like the old 1100
what do you think of the KAWASAKI Z1300 it has same number of spark plugs as the R3 twice the number of cylinder's and almost as much hp but no were near as much torque ,i think that would be the pick to compare to the R3 for a eighty's bike
Growing up my dad had '79 XS1100 full dressed (faring, bags, etc). It's the bike that made me fall in love with motorcycles at a young age. I remember when I was about 8, my dad took off from a stop light into a full wheelie with me on the back (thank The Lord for that rear backrest!) he said he didn't mean too, and that's the only time I remember him doing a wheelie on that bike.
He sold it to his brother in the early 90s and didn't have another bike for nearly 20years. I bought a very low mileage '03 Kawi Voyager in 2011. I had fallen in love with it because it reminded me so much of my dads old bike. Well it reminded him too, an he bought it from me 4 months later. I think he's put about 35k miles on it in the last two years.
I loved that old XS1100, and the memory of riding around on it and its leading to both my dad and I having a passion for riding has helped keep us close as father and son.
