In 1999 I bought a yamaha xs1100 special to replace my first bike, a honda night hawk 650. The bike was a monster compared to the honda before it. The only bad thing was the factory handle bars. $20 later and that was corrected. The bike was clean and in good shape with low miles. My friend liked it so much he bought a midnight special that looked like it came from a sewer to replace his cbx500. His bike tossed the timing chain through the valve head after a couple of months. I was just starting in my career and got a very nice bounus from the company I was working at, so I sold him my xs1100 and bought a kawasaki vulcan 1500, otherwise known as the worst piece of **** I have ever owned in my entire life.
He rode the xs1100 for a bit, crashed it and screwed up the frame. We put the motor from my old bike onto the frame of his old pile of crap and he rode a bit but I think didn't give himself time to shake off the accident and eventually sold it.
Fast forwards some years and kids later, he purchased another xs1100 special this winter. I just got done replacing the intake boots and rebuilding the carbs on it. He will now just need an oil change and he is ready to ride. The bike is running well and is pulling strong.
Then he said it. He thinks the xs will give my beast a run for its money. How does one even respond?
