I think I might have found what the box under the gearbox on the Roadster is for. While trying to poke a spring through it to see what was in it, I realised it's maybe there to equalise the pipe lengths to both silencers.
if you look at this pic, (if it appears) ,taken as if you were standing where the engine is, the exhaust to the RH can goes into the box and straight out down the long pipe, but the exhaust to the LH can has to do a sort of "figure-of-eight " flow inside the box before it exits. it adds up to roughly the same length as the pipe to the RH can, but is smaller bore.
Just a thought...but I'm going to make something better
