Back in the 90's, I hosted a Russian student, and my son went over to St. Petersburg. The girl sat on the couch, watching a Memorial Day parade with all the flags, and some protesters.
She said nothing like that would ever be allowed to happen in her country.
I said that times change, give it time.
She said she thought not, it had been that way since her grandparents.
Russia is one of those unique countries that is ruled by dictators, but has some of the most prosperous industries and resources in the world.
As an example, Russia has the largest amount of rough diamonds, both mined and in storage, and still in the ground, by far, in the world. It is estimated that if they released just what they have in boxes already mined, it would ruin the diamond market, causing it to crash.
They grow more potatoes than you can imagine, but cannot get them to market. Their "breadbasket" area, like our Midwest, is a great growth region, but no interstate system to get it all to market.
Sad.
When Mitt Romney challenged then President Obama in that debate about the Russian dominance, and Obama said that the 80's called, they wanted their foreign policy back, he was dead wrong. To this day, I wish Romney would not have been such a nice Mormon man and let it drop, he should have kept hitting Obama with it. Now we see it...
I am a conservative, but yesterday I think Trump kind of got his head handed to him, at least publicly.
They did, however, really know how to throw a soccer party! I'm not a huge French fan, would have liked Croatia at least to make it a nail biter. But the French won that the day after Bastille day, so good for them. They need a reason to celebrate.
