starting problems

ok i'll do that I checked all fuses when it happened and all good I had the battery on charge all night and half the day today and it was full chager but only 75CCA when it should be 310CCA put load on it and failed then let sit for 30 mins and it fell to 20CCA at 11.67 volts. so another bad battery but got 2 years out of this one. I have to wait for a new battery as it has to be ordered. then i'll start checking everything else one by one.

A new battery has to be ordered? if you want to ride right now hit wallyworld and pick one up.

def battery. it can be hit or miss with off the shelf batterys so i'm not surprised how fast your going thru them. I have 2 waverunners and i'll get a battery that will last 5 years and other times i'll buy one every year 3 years in a row. I recommend testing them new and if the new battery reads less than 14.6v standing it's probably sat too long.

JMTC.. i've had 5 batteries in my 05 since i've owned it. I learned awhile back to always keep it on the battery tender. I've left on the lights and drained it one time never to reserect it again. There is a PHANTOM DRAIN on my bike that doesn't allow me to let it sit for any length of time without draining the battery. Anytime it slips under 12 volts i have trouble starting it. This doesn't happen to my RK or Busa. As long as i keep the TRIII on the tender it's fine. http://www.fixkick.com/drain/drain.html

I'll probably jinx myself here but my 05' still has the original battery. I've always kept it on a tender.

On my 2001 RK two batteries i only changed them out because i was going X-country and it was 5 years old. The 2008 Busa has it's original battery and has never given me any issues. I don't understand why the phantom drain hasn't been investigated. I wonder if the battery is too small for the Rocket, i know the Boss Hoss has a bigger battery.?? This is an interesting read about the Honda Rune R.I.P we're on a fine line between conventional and unconventional...

ok guys I have new battery and have checked what I can and test what I can find specs on. it still just clicks if I hold the start button it will just roll over once slow. I test the starter and it has 12volts on top and disconnected the bottom lead to test threw the solenoid and it only has 19-20 MV. the started spins at 12v just fine so do I have a solenoid problem or is it still relay or ignition switch problem. still testing and ideas would be great.

Take this cover off the starter and inspect and clean the contact areas maybe you losing some juice here

also remove the positive cable from the starter and clean that area. It might help and does not take long!!!!

ok i'll have to look there but i have to say. i've chase my tail for 3 days checking this bike cleaning every connection and new grease. i put another new battery and that bike fired right up. only got one code P0560 ( ECM power supply circurt malfunction ) so i clean the code and the check engine hasn't come back on. it charging just fine i don't get how battery can work just fine then quit. i get new battery can be bad so second new battery was a good. bike back together put on computer and everything great.

Out of curiosity, do you have the Eastern Beaver on it? If not, then it could well be the ignition switch wiring. It is also worth checking the starter button contacts, as well as the clutch and kickstand safety switches. The contacts can get dirty and corrode. They are easy to take apart and clean, but be very careful not to lose the little springs and stuff as they try to exit their cramped quarters with expeditious velocity.

Also check for loose and dirty wiring on the heavy duty cables - both at the battery ends and the starter motor ends.

Some folks use an additional, or a heavier duty ground cable to help starting. There is also a relay mod that adds an extra relay to get power directly from the battery to the starter, rather than through the ignition switch wiring.
On the relay mod, what kind of relay should be used for secondary relay?
