Same here. Though I've been trying really hard to not use the bike for commuting lately. This month marks the end of my first year with the bike and I've got about 16K miles on it. With the 10K service and new tires I can't afford annual maintenance costs of like $1400.00
I think Sully has it right. I'm not an aggressive rider at all. Mostly upright and I don't dig in really hard in the turns. Though that part is getting better. So who knows... this set may not last me as long.
bought my my bike in january 08 3 mets so far on the rear, it seems i can find nails , the last tire i was gonna buy an avon ,none in stock, however i did put an avon on the front after 11000 miles.love it
I seriously can not believe that you guys are pulling that kind of miles out of a rear tire. Hell I don't think I ever got that out of a front on any of my bikes. The Rocket has been munching a rear ( all metz so far ) about every 6000 or so. Fronts about every 11,000 got about 46,500 on her now. Might have some thing to do with higher road temps hear in Florida I've often wondered how that would effect tire wear. The hotter something gets , its usually gets softer too. The last go round I sprung for the Avon . It seems to be holding up a bit better but I don't think it is quite as sticky as the Metz. I've felt is breaking loose on some slick surfaces under hard acceleration.
Keep in mind that Juggs just took his tire down to where some cord is showing. You guys in the UK would get strung up for doing that. Most US states don't actually do a "safety" check on tires ... consequently, its up to the owners to decide, and most owners tend to push things a bit.
I know I've gotten down to the white innerds of an MC tire before. Oops!
Man ... you seriously got your money's worth out of that sucker.
Whoever mentioned maintenance costs (Kroth?) ... good grief, consider the money you are saving in gas alone ... some of those costs will be recouped quite quickly. Also, it costs money to maintain a car also (unless you were going to take public transport).
Also, at least for me personally, a bike on a commute is a major stress reliever, whereas a commute in a car just drives me bonkers and I feel like I want to murder somebody by the time I get home or get to the office.
Soooo many benefits of commuting on a bike. Also, you can do some of the maintenance yourself to save money. Plus, it can actually be enjoyable if you are demented enough.
Anyway, the cost of operating your bike per mile is quite likely less than that of a car. That's always been the case for me.
