RPM while cruising at 80mph

I would prefer to be around 22-2300 @ 80 just for the gas mileage.

Sure you are just under power range at 3k, but I have no problems dropping to 3rd and hitting warp speed around other traffic.

You should install a tach on your Touring. First thing I did to mine and really great to drive with. Tach and speedo put together and you can tell which gear your in.

First thing I did was put a tach on my Touring, too. I rode a 4 speed Kawasaki for about 5 years without one, but always wished it had it.
I wanted a Rocket classic mainly for the 240 rear tire and the tach, but got a sweet deal on a 2010 R3T.
I don't get the tach-speedo gear thing yet, but I often discover I have an extra gear to use when over 70 MPH on this touring!!

Maximum torque is measured at 2750rpm on the Roadster if i remember correctly so at 3000rpm you can still twist the throttle in top gear and bugger off at a rate of knots....fuel usage while cruising at 2750 revs in 5th gear should be pretty efficient too im guessing...im as happy as a sand boy galloping along at 100-110kmh in 5th.

Tis the ONLY true cruiser for the "HARD" rider!
However, me thinks it can also work fine for the casual cruiser as well.

You can tell by the seat of your pants, sound of engine etc what gear you are in I hate the gear indicator on my Roadster if I knew how to make it go away I would.
why bother it is soooo tiny hardly visible .. I do not think it is safe to try to read the gear you are in while moving due to the size of the digit
