rear sub frame question

Exactly that I asked for advice, expected opinions but best kept to yourselves those who chose to insult.
It's my bike and my choices needless to say I won't be slagging any of you off irrelevant of my opinions.

Personally, I really like the look you probably have in mind, the minimalist bobber, and on a R3 I think it would pure sex.

I just can't imagine doing that to 1 of 500 of what is very possibly going to be the last special edition rocket ever made... On the other hand, I would immediately replace the exhaust and intact work, add a small screen and probably put on BST wheels as the first big money upgrade for 18" rubber, and that's more than many feel is ok for a collectors edition.

Concerning legality, almost every us state requires vehicle certification after frame work as proposed, however, VERY few actually enforce it, even the ones that require a safety check/inspection would probably miss the frame hack if done right.

That said, if you must proceed, notice that the two pieces of frame extending slightly past the cross bar form a box shape where they are welded together. If I were doing this, I would hack it just behind the crossbar, and weld in a steel box tube, maybe a 1"x2" piece, crossbar to reinforce that little dinky round cross member so the 2" orientation is top to bottom and 1" in the front to back direction relative to the bike. This way you would provide torsional strength and side load strength.

Thanks for the advice, adding extra strength to the cross bar would be a wise thing. I have now found a custom work shop here in the UK that can do the work rather than myself taking an angle grinder to the frame (cringe i know) i have CES headers on the way and have a short stubby can and custom link pipe for the rear end. K&N filters relocated catch tank and a cut down bear claw will also be done when the sub frame gets chopped. Street fighter bars and one off risers and several other mods in the pipeline.
I understand all your opinions on the limited addition aspect but i did not buy the bike for that reason. I was after a roadster as i had a look in mind that i wanted to do to the bike and had a 10k budget. The Rocket X came up for sale and the guy selling it took 10k and some loose change when i put an offer in so that's how i ended up with it but i have a vision for the bike and i will continue to push forward with that. It will be finished by the spring and i will post some pictures no doubt i will get slagged off again for doing it but some are interested and i will choose to try and ignore the insults.
Thanks again for those with positive input.

The bottom line is that it's your call and your call alone, poseidon. You have your vision for what you intend your R3 to be and I admire the tenacity you have shown to execute that master plan. I believe that everyone here will help and support you along the way whether or not we agree with your intentions or sense of style, the former being the basis of this site's existence and the latter being important only to the individuals expressing their opinions.

Good luck and carry on! Can't wait to see your revision of the X model.

Still kind of new to the forum. but one thing I really like about it is how straight forward the people on here are. no bull****ing around so you really can not take it personal. A few times reading some one else's opinion has place a fresh thought forward that kind of change my original opinion. You may not agree with a opinion or even like it but it is how we learn and grow. Both in knowledge of Rockets and everyday stuff. :):):):)

Think you'll find no one has set out to insult you. It's a public forum mate. If you can't cope with the answer don't ask the question. Up to you what you do to your bike and some will agree with you, some will say they agree with you even though they don't and some will tell you it's something they wouldn't do. Not checking on the legality of irreversible changes would be, well, not the smartest way to go about it. Hacking up a limited edition is also going to raise eyebrows. Not sure what you were expecting to get back.

Canberra ,this maybe sounds a bit crazy but over here we can do pretty much what we want to our bikes with out a check from any one, as long as the bike is already registered. It's down to owners to decide what's safe if there doing the mods themself.

Same here.............until you want to sell it (or more correctly, transfer ownership) or put in an insurance claim.

Unlike here...

"YOU WANT TO DO WHAT!? Replace a light bulb! We cannot permit that!"

Back on thread, I cannot say I would do the same if I had an X, but it's your bike, and will be interesting to see the outcome. May be an idea to try to think out how not only to do the mod but how to undo it if you get the desire to do so later, try to make it not overly difficult to do.
