And no, I don't mean problems with my ass...

Here's the situation. I'll try to give a brief and then as much of a detailed description as I can.

Brief:
I can hear the back tire spinning as though there is no oil in the final drive.

Details:
As I ride, I can hear what sounds like that rubbing sound that comes when your breaks on your car are finally worn enough such that that little tab starts to come into contact with the rotor. I can also feel some slight vibration that travels from that to the frame to my feet as they rest on the floor boards.

What I have done so far:

I checked and topped off the final drive oil. According to the manual, the oil level should just be to the bottom of the filler hole. So I stood the bike straight up on my floor jack and removed the plug. I stuck my finger in and found wetness. It was clean meaning there are no shavings or grit of any kind. I topped it off and replaced the plug. This did not resolve the problem.

I thought it may have been the rear breaks so I replaced the pads. They did in fact need to be replaced but that was not the cause either.

So I put the bike back on the jack and lifted it enough to bring the rear wheel off the ground. This way I could spin the wheel. And sure enough the sound only happens when the wheel is spinning and it really sounds as though it's coming from the final drive.

With the final drive oil being okay and with the break pads having been replaced I'm at a complete loss as to what this could be.

Finally, I recently had a new rear tire put on and of course that meant the rear wheel had been removed and replaced on the bike. Is it possible that in replacing it, something wasn't done correctly? I didn't do it so I don't know if there are any "gotchas" that one should be aware of.

I really need some assistance here because I don't want to ride the bike till I figure out what it is.

Thoughts?

With the rear wheel off the ground grab the tire on each side and see if there's any side to side movement. Any play at all would indicate wheel bearings.

I'd also drain and replace the diff fluid. Any shavings are probably at the bottom of the case.

Oh, and its brakes, not breaks....

No side to side movement. No wobble or anything like that.
Sigh...

Looks like I'll have to take it in. I just hope this is a warrantee item...

Hi krothnbrg
A few months ago davidsonb had a similar broblem and I think it was the bearing in the rear of the tranny. I think triumph stepped up to plate and paid for the upgrade kit.

Yup another rear tortional bearing failure at a guess...

Hi again krothnbrg
I just called davidsonb and it was a bearing in the tranny, and triumph paid the bill . his bike is an 05. so 1 more point for triumph. Davidsonb 's advice get it in to triumph real soon. not worth the wreck if it locks up.

DITTO: just got the funkiest sound coming from my ride yesterday, took it to the Scottsdale Ducati/Triumph/BMW shop- I dont use them much, but my other lead mechanic at my regular shop is mysteriously no longer there.. the Triumph mechanic wont be back till end of next week, so the BMW mechanic takes it for a spin, said he doesnt like what he hears. tells me not to ride it, could lock up & possibly do more damage. Mine is a 2007 R3 with 13k miles, I dont beat on her at all, but definitely give her a run for her money.. so this is a very unusual thing. husbands 2005 R3, had to have the infamous 'upgade' kit that supposedly doesnt exist and Triumph paid for it just after the warranty ran out... so there is hope. Mine is still under warranty, I'm just losing my mind as I have a 12 day pre paid & planned trip to Glacier/Yellowstone/Mt Rushmore in 3 weeks. Not sure my ride will be ready.....I am losing my mind.

Lizz, not sure who your regular guy is but have you tried talking to Jason at TSS. He took over for Eric. Or, since you're out of warranty you could try Eric at his new shop on Bethany Home.

I've not heard good things about the Scottsdale dealership.

Re: .

This sucks!!! You have a "spare" bike though, right? Always keep a spare.
