Ramair filter arrived...

I am not about to get into a pissing match about a set of air filters. I was asked to see if these filters were as good as the little K&N's which go under the bearclaw. This is because many folk wish to retain the bearclaw. I tuned a bike with exhaust and RU1770 filters( which are much better than 2780s), then fitted the Ramair as a comparison. I checked the tune of the bike and it did lose average of 2 ftlbs and 1-2 hp across the range. To me that was a very GOOD result. The Ramair filter is better then the little K&N's and fits under the bearclaw well. A week or two later I had a customer with a classic with Jardines of the day on it. I fitted some street cams to it and a Ramair filter and tuned the bike. I have done quite a number of these bikes with Jars and K&Ns or Unifilters, under the claw, and never gone over 169hp with that combo of parts, so to get at least 3 hp MORE while still retaining the bearclaw, that again is a good result. The exhaust is what holds back the numbers in that combo. I am sure it is not the most high performance filter on the market, but I believe it is absolutely up to what it was designed for/to do. I made the effort to do this partly for you guys here and partly because the Ramair guys sent me one to test. So it is tested. Merry Christmas to all, have a safe one.
SO looks like the filter works well But not the best WAS the filter oiled when tested ??

Aside from the specific subject of this topic, I just think how lucky we are to have people like Nev, Wayne and even Art when he isn't on a high horse; who are prepared to share their considerable knowledge with us, and for free.

Slight correction there Art, the filter can be called the 'best' for use with an unmodified bearclaw, so far! I doubt the story is complete by any means.

The filter was oiled, they come like that from the factory.

I have air cleaner overload! My Carpentered engine has a single under the tank air filter with JAR exhausts and makes 208 hp at the rear wheel.
Runs like a ROCKET.
I may try Carpenter's exhaust system this year but am not interested in high rpm hp vs. torque.
My bike, in this configuration, is a big time rush.

Apart from the Carpenter bit - that's what I was running for years (I run Jardine headers with a different tail pipe - Thugs from Sam). Tried triple K&N's and the noise was simply unacceptable so went back to a single undertank. If I notice the difference on a stock engine - I'd guess you'd REALLY notice it on yours.

It takes a small leap of faith. And it's hardly expensive. But not everybody likes being leading edge - so I can understand if you'd rather wait for numbers.

I'd really love to try a TTS, Lush or Carpenter engine (not to mention "The Falcon" or Les's beast) - but the costs involved are beyond me. The shipping costs alone make me cringe. Little things like filters that can be put back as stock - OK.

I balanced the throttles, all three on 620 then finally got out for a ride today, 350km round trip. The bike certainly performed well across the entire RPM range that I use.
The air induction noise would be a little annoying in city riding as would be the chirping, only experienced the chirping at open throttle around 2000RPM.
I might try some noise reduction material on the underneath of the bar claw.
In all the RAMAIR suits me

After you have 1000 plus kms through it you'll find the PCV quietens it down more.
Add Les's Air-claw - quieter still. But take a firm grip on your licence above 4000rpms.

There is VERY little clearance - just about any sound proofing will touch the filter - thus reducing surface area. Not that it seems to matter much ime.

Did you try the 91 as we discussed

Hans, I did use the 91, it seems to lesson the chirping but not eliminate it. I did think the chirping was a little worse when the motor was cold and only very slight when fully warmed up but as all the riding was highway riding I can't be sure but I had great day out.

and that is probably the most important thing
