R3 + shortbed = what the hell are you doing?

Loaded up

I love that UHaul motorcycle trailer. Rented one many times. It is a great little trailer. Picked up my Rocket new in Reno and brought her back to Boise with it. Tried to get several center managers to sell me one. They would not budge. So I bought my single axle enclosed trailer for those longer trips because the wife can't ride all day like I can.

Why should she, Bill?
She has Porsche!

Don't mean to steal the post but,,,
I trailer with a UHaul like you.
How much front fork compression?
Where do you anchor the rear straps?
How much compression on the rear straps?
I ask because I saw mine fall off the straps onto it's side.

Well, I just guesstimate on the compression. I had it standing straight, 2 straps going through the forks and ratcheted both sides until I couldn't do it anymore barehanded. The rear strap went through the back rim to keep the back from bouncing. Then I checked it after the first 30 minutes. The back strap loosened up some I assume because the rear tire turned a bit. After re-tightening it I checked every hour for 800 miles till I got home. No issues, everything stayed tight and I hit some really bad stretches of road. One word of advice, take an extra strap an put and put it on the trailer gate. That is one noisy trailer and strapping the gate tight quieted it down a ton.

A happy ending is transporting one's bike without damaging it. For the last 30 years or so I've hauled bikes in the back of a pickup, to include Harley Electra Glides. A good set of ramps is the key and I have a 3 piece 1500 pound rated set.

In my wiser and more senior years I've become more wary of loading and unloading a bike into my pickup, with visions of my bike turning over as I back it down the ramp. On my last transporting trip I took my Rocket and VStrom to Monterey to give to my son so did both, using the U-Haul utility trailer. I have a nice trailer now that will accommodate either a heavy touring bike or my sidecar rig. I'd still transport a bike in the back of my pickup but nothing the likes of my Rocket Touring.

I've hauled mine in a shortbed twice. Once after I wrecked, and once to get it inspected in Hawaii. The wreck took me and two buddies to push it up the ramp. Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemies!

For the inspection I was lucky enough to live right by an empty storage place with some loading docks.

In short, it's doable... but better to find a different way.
