Quick Valve Shim Replacement

Fred the replacement bucket is in the mail :D

Got her all back together last night. Scott, the bucket you sent me had just enough variation in it's tolerance that my clearance came right in with the original shim ! I should go buy a lotto ticket (you too :D). That was the only shim I was going to have to buy so you also saved me about a 120 mile drive. The Triumph shop that just opened near where I work doesn't have a shim set yet. The rest of them (4 were out of spec on the loose side) I was able to correct using shims left over from the first time I did them. The Polish shim tool works like a champ ! Thanks again Scott ! When we meet up in Montrose I'll buy you dinner or a bottle or a hooker, whatever you want ;)

I am wondering, do you guys find it easy to find the needed shims at the dealer without having to order them?

Also, I have access to a surface grinder. Would there be a problem with grinding the old shims to fit?

The dealer closest to me doesn't have a shim set yet. The one a hour and a half away does. They have all the sizes. My father used to have the shims for his 900 Kaw surface ground. There was some controversy at the time whether you could grind through the hardness. Never had a problem on his.

I think they may be parkerized, a surface hardner which grinding may foul up.
I would check out the shim hardness.

Run into a problem with my old GS1000S years ago. As valves and valve seats wear and get ground the shims you need are thinner and thinner. Eventually all the shim kits around the various bike shops had an assortment of thick shims and no thin ones. I ground a few thou off the end of my valve stems. Problem solved as everyone had thick shims and was happy to trade them for my old thin one's.
