Oil level

Evening all, question I have just taken an oil reading the first picture is from cold shows minimum and the second is with the oil measuring procedure shows hardly any oil, is that right and I need to add some ? Just asking so I can make sure I don't over fill, the handbook tells me how to measure but reading on forums and chat there's alot of questions marks about it, any comparison and advice would be great just so I'm sure thanks all, and if it is low how much should I add or is it little bit at a time

Looks like you're low on oil to me.

I just follow the procedure in the handbook, start it, (don't rev it), let it idle for 60 seconds, turn off, wait 60 - 90 seconds & check it. If it's low after the 60 - 90 second wait, then you need to top it up. The manual says this is the only way to get an accurate oil level. The engine & oil must be cold for this procedure ie first start of the day.

Perfect thank you that's what I suspected but wanted to be absolutely clear, I only bought it in Oct and it's been garaged since nov till beginning of Feb so want to make sure I was doing it right as I love this bike, I appreciate your reply buddy thanks

The manual says wait at least 3min after turning engjne off and norhing about time of day. Cold is relative to local climate, 80°F on a California summer morning is still "cold" as is 30°F in the winter.
There do seem to be some inconsistencies based on seemingly unkowns variables though on the level showing on the dipstick.

Yeah I'm measuring here at the moment in the UK is 8c about 47f that's what I'm wondering if it's to cold to get an accurate measurement being so cold ?

That's kind of the conclusion Ive come to after 1 year ownership. I've been checking it in the afternoon after riding it to work in the morning. There was even discussion in another thread about the oil disappearing into a mysterious engine void...

I have not needed to add oil to my bike yet but when I do how do I know how much to add? How much oil does the cross hatch section on the dipstick correlate to? Since we have a dry sump and this odd oil check procedure someone must have this figured out. Let's say on day I check it and the level...

You are correct Protonhound, it does indeed say wait 3 minutes after a 60 - 90 second run. It also says to make sure the engine is cold & failure to follow the procedure will result in an incorrect indication of the oil in the engine. How cold is cold? To me that means not having been run overnight or several hours (like after work & before a ride home)

Why Triumph couldn't put a level mark on the dipstick once the tank is at the right level is a bit odd.

Roll it out of the garage, level ground, put kickstand down, start it, start 90 second timer on phone. Don’t touch throttle. Turn off. Start three minute timer on phone. After three minutes, pull dipstick, wipe it, re-insert all the way, pull again, and take reading. Done. I think all the way down to the bottom of the cross hatch is 1 quart but I wouldn’t swear to it. I don’t know what they consider “cold“ but I know first thing in the morning/1st start of the day better have it covered and I don’t care if it’s 90° out. Even dealerships mess up checking the oil sometimes.
