Oil Filter to prefill or not

Pre fill or Dry

Never done it before. Never had a problem in not doing it.
I just wipe a bit of oil around the rubber seal and on it goes.
I never rev the engine on start up, just let the new oil circulate for a minute and then check the oil level again etc...

Why would pre-filling the filter be a benefit?
As long as the oil is circulating properly, the filter will fill in due course.
Ok, there might be a very short period where the oil flow might drop due to air inside the filter canister, but if the engine is just ticking over, I can't see what the big deal is.
If it was, then it would be recommended in factory workshop manuals, and i've never seen the procedure mention in any i've used in the past.

When you start an engine that's been sitting for a few hours/days, surely some oil will have run out of the filter canister and left a small air pocket which will have to be pushed through. What's the difference in that case?

Ok now you all have done it you have me thinking.
if you throw it on there it is now possible to hold the throttle wide open (clear flood mode so it wont start dont know about the new models)and just use the starter till it primes. now this might take a little longer cranking 100/200 ? as compared to running 750 plus.
i have just changed my oil so will be a long time before trying.
just food for thaught. lol

Install out of the box but i usually run the motor first so everything is lubed up so no damage if it runs a few seconds before it pressurises.
The thing is if the bike has been standing for a few days the oil tends to drain down into the sump and the oil tank is empty so it runs for a few seconds while the oil pump picks up the oil and feeds it to the tank until the oil light extinguishes and then pressurises the system. Mine drains down after 3 days standing and i have replaced the non return valve but it still does it. I do not rev it until the oil light is out. I then accepted that they all do it as this is my second Rocket and the first one did the same thing.

One reason I do let the Rocket idle for awhile is it seems to take the oil a while to pressure up and stop the "rattling". I can't imagine how much more it would rattle with filling a dry filter. That's zero oil pressure.
The oil has most likely drained from the tank into the sump after standing for a few days and you have to let it idle while the oil pump picks up the oil and refills the oil tank. and pressurise the system.
I believe the oil filter has a non return valve fitted in it.

my rocket never drains down and i do not want it to set for a month to find out.
but if your rocket does drain down you would definaly want to start it up and let it run long enough to fill the tank.
i try to let mine run long enough to get the oil warm so it drains better jmo

I do not know how to fix it but if it drains down after about 3 or 4 days standing i pour a 1/4 litre of oil into the oil tank and when i start it the oil light goes out straight away.
Then when tank is full i draw it out again with a syringe. It's a bit of messing about but it helps to protect it.
Belt and braces job.

Make sure the o-ring on the middle sump drain is good, if this gets cut or comes off, oil will drain from the tank into the sump.
