Never done it before. Never had a problem in not doing it.
I just wipe a bit of oil around the rubber seal and on it goes.
I never rev the engine on start up, just let the new oil circulate for a minute and then check the oil level again etc...
Why would pre-filling the filter be a benefit?
As long as the oil is circulating properly, the filter will fill in due course.
Ok, there might be a very short period where the oil flow might drop due to air inside the filter canister, but if the engine is just ticking over, I can't see what the big deal is.
If it was, then it would be recommended in factory workshop manuals, and i've never seen the procedure mention in any i've used in the past.
When you start an engine that's been sitting for a few hours/days, surely some oil will have run out of the filter canister and left a small air pocket which will have to be pushed through. What's the difference in that case?
