So I just changed my oil. Removed all three plugs and the filter. Replaced all of the above and proceeded to pour the new oil in. Started off with 2 x 1L jugs then a 4 L. Just before the 4L was empty (I was just about to stop) the oil came flooding out of the filler hole. Having run the engine for a minute and checking the level, it is way too high.

What could I have done wrong? The capacity id 5.9L isn't it?

Update...

Poured the old oil into the new containers. Only ended up with a little over 5L. Allowing for the fact that the level was a little low and I did spill some, I'm close but further than I think I should be. Any idea all the oil didn't drain?

What do I do now?

Yes, the capacity with a new oil filter is 5.9L

Did you warm up the engine fully; before you drained the oil?

So... I am wondering if you actually removed the correct three drain plugs:

Double check that. Prior engines to this serial number had plugs located in different areas. Let me know if your serial number is before 217502 and I can post a pic of that.

Fully warmed up... Yes

Correct plugs... Yes

The picture you posted is correct for my bike.

I've done 4 or 5 oil changes on this bike already. My problem was dumping the full 6 (ish) Litres in rather than stopping at 5L and going from there. Which is precisely what I've done in the past. Just don't know what I was thinking. I guess the fact of the matter is I wasn't thinking.

Thanks for the response Will

Sure.

Remember when checking the oil level; make sure she is good and warmed up; after waiting for a minute once you shut her down. You'll get truer readings then.

Three drain plugs. For a motorcycle motor. Only the British are insane enough to come up with a maintenance feature as this.

Nice clean length of hose. Syphon out just over 1l and put back slowly testing the level as you go then when just over the minimum start up and warn through. Top up to just above half way. Job done
