New Cams New Thread

I've gotten word, all required parts except 1 were already on hand.
New Neville tensioner - Check
2006 Tensioner Blades - Check
Man cam - Check
Cam Cover Gasket - Check
Oil Filter/Oil - Check
Distilled Water/DEI Water Wetter - Check
Front Cover Gasket - bueller, bueller, <sigh>

Already all installed, just need to finish up the cam timing, but, that'll have to wait a few days, life in the way.

Should have new dyno time soon :)

Thats a 05 guide out of a silver motor. The 06 ones resemble it except the steel part is not like a U channel. Anyway the new ones like you have were also used prior to 06. And after all the different tries they came back to the aluminum ones.

All I know is Nev says the silver motor ones I have (came out of an 06 silver engine) fit his tensioner and he's right, no need for the boot/sleeve deal used with APE tensioner when using his tensioner because the head is the right size and not undersized like the APE one.

The aluminum ones being the ones that were damaged right?

Currently working through some very dicey cam timing issues with enormous potential for clashing if done wrong.

Ok bud good luck. Oh and the shoe is not because the head on the APE tensioner is smaller. Although you are right it is ! The fact is the first shoe fit the auto tensioner which has a larger head on the plunger. At that time no one in the uper half of this planet was using a manual tensioner. Once the APE came into the equation the modification to the shoe to fit individaul tensioners came about and the designer even looked at one size fits both. Never measured Nev's could be its the same diameter as the OEM plunger.

I know that sounds weird especially if you take into consideration who designed and manufactured them 6061 shoes and the modification of the cam guides. At first all 4 styles of guides so any style could be updated. Plus also incorporating the auto tensioner modification for those that did not want a manual one. Ran 10,000 miles thrashing the heck of of the engine and the modified auto tensioner performed flawless adjusting its self.

Oh and I can enlarge your guide and shoe and see it was made by Warp Aerospace Division. Good to see it holds up well. :D

So aside from steel have others broken the guides?
Just two bikes that I know of besides steels have crack the guide. Of course that was before any tensioner modifications were developed. They just had the stock OEM auto tensioner. One of them being mine which is were the modifications to the guide and original auto tensioner modification came from. Then it was introduced to the APE manual tensioner. Which wasn't much different then the auto. Basically the plunger pocket which had .010 clearance to the OEM plunger was reduced to have the same clearance over the APE plunger diameter. From what I see your shoe is not damaged so with a 1/2" endmill you could open it up to the same clearance over Nevs which might just be the OEM plunger size. You have both with a set of calipers that can quicy be checked. I do know his is larger then the APE plunger.

Yeah, what's throwing me off, and I'm absolutely not trying to challenge your or Nevilles experience and time put into this is this.

The ones that were in my bike got the faces scored by the broken outer link as the chain spun before it toally snapped, so not comfortable reusing them.

The 06 ones have a completely different contour to them, it will put the chain at more of a curve, while I don't know that's a bad/good thing since it'll force more cam gear wrap I don't know what I don't know here.

To me the u channel steel one vs the aluminum flat logically is stronger, buuuut, I'm no machinist or metallurgist. Sometimes shapes and materials can defy intuitive knowledge.

I wish I was home to put my hands on mine. And of course I am not trying to get in between you and Nev or even Bob. The change in the arc can be from a couple things but not knowing what or why the engineering changes were made its hard to say. Except one must consider what is available on the market to purchase. And that old blade might be far and few between. Which trying to produce a exspensive kit to sell about the world you don't want to say oh you use this guide that you probably can't buy anymore or it will take you a year or two waiting on someone to scrap that particular run of 05 motors that were sold in 06 for a short period and who knows might be in some 07 Classic Tourers. Anyway steel is the only one I'm aware to break the guide once modified. But he is also one of the only fellers I know thats broke the exhaust cam in two places not to mention eating a few crankshafts. Oh and Rick Tamota is one of the only guys to make this type of ashtray.
