Never Re-invent the wheel

Taking the instrument panel off is easy. The only risk is scratching the tank, just gotta be a little careful.

You take the three screws off, then lift it carefully and tilt it to the side (this is where you want to be careful, the rubber that it rests on is just threaded onto an edge, it's not permanently mounted at all to the instrument cluster). Underneath there is a single connector going into the instruments, just pull back the rubber gasket and detach it by squeezing on it and gently pulling. Voila, one removed instrument cluster.

As for paint protetion, I'm still thinking about 3M paint protection film. It should protect the parts you rub up against just fine and be almost invisible. It might be a way for you to have your tank bib and eat it too.. uh I mean your cake. At least in theory you could cut out a part sized almost exactly like your tank bib and then apply that to the paint between the paint and the bib. The bib would then be rubbing on the durable 3M film instead of the paint itself.

Great idea! I will check into this stuff...and if I go that route, I will post the results! thanx!

I don't have a tank bra but I have a tank bib which I'm thinking is probably the same thing. Installation was easy just like Croft said with the exception that I removed the gauge cluster seal. You don't need it with that big piece of leather under it. Mines been on 4 years and not a scratch or fade.
