My Moto Hobo life

Well Marine, this sailor will have to disagree about the inhospitable part. My last Desert survival course was in El Centro during August in 2001. All we could bring to eat was a single MRE for a week. I weighed a pound more at the end of the course than when I started. There is lots to eat out there. ;-)
Understood. With the right training you can get by. Regular civilians would surely die crossing that valley in the summer.

So Jarheads doing desert training in El Centro would most likely sneak down to Mexicali, cross the border, and trade the MRE’s for tequila, tortillas and senoritas!

I did similar jungle survival training in the Philippines where we only got a bag of rice. We ate pretty good with a local guides help to keep us from eating poisonous plants.

the city boys didn’t fare so well as they wouldn’t eat the frogs and bamboo bats. That meant seconds for the rest of us!!

They taught us how to make snares to catch huge snakes but we never got one.

The large whitish/tan desert iguanas there taste like snake and are easy to catch if you have a good stick. They skin easy to and dry out like jerky within a few hours.

Awesome photos by the way. Thanks for sharing.

JEST was a ton of fun. I would go back and do that in a heartbeat. Grubs really aren't too bad tasting if cooked a little bit. :)

Balut in town was good too if you can get past the grossness and initial smell.
I used to get a couple at night with beer and a few on my way back to Subic Bay for breakfast.

Hot tubs at my RV park are 101-103F and perfect for unwinding after a nice ride.

Decided to take an untethered ride for a few days to Barstow, Death Valley and Las Vegas.

Are those hot tubs fed by hot springs?

I've eaten live witchetty grubs from an old ladies dilly bag and squished out the innards with my teeth from a rubbery wriggling cutoff finger of a rubber glove without a qualm but....... the feathers and toe tails of 'Balut' would tickle my throat! ;) 🤔:cautious::whitstling::roll::roll::roll::roll:

I think ours are fed by the emptied tubs in the fancier Park next door ‘The Fountain of Youth.’
Actually, the spring is 50’ away and bubbling up out of nowhere.
They poured the tubs out of concrete and created a aqueduct to Route the water to them.
Etiquette here is to drain the water, spray the tub and put the plug back in so the next person gets clean hot water.
This spring seems to be PH-neutral and mineral free as it has no odor or taste.

Those are missing the “afterbirth” or whatever the juice is that you suck out after cracking the shell before indulging in your snack/meal.

An acquired taste for sure and most do not get past that first step.

The less reputable purveyors sometimes over or under incubate their Balut (or substitute chicken eggs over duck). That results in bones and feathers forming or the head pops off when you try to extract it.

TMI??
