Finally hit the 40 mpg milestone. Took a ride to the UP (Michigan's Upper Peninsula - great riding btw) and had to fill up in a little town on Lake Superior. No 89 octane, so filled up on 91. Then rode the scenic route along the Pictured Rocks to Munising and on to Newberry, a total distance of 128.8 miles. Filled up in Newberry and it took 3.22 gallons - 40 mpg on the nose. Riding two up - total weight on board about 450#. About 25 miles of twisties in 4th gear and the rest was highway at around 60 mph. I was surprised at the result.

Michigan has some really great riding. Kind of a forgotten state. The bridge in itself is really a trip especially the grates. The U.P. is beautiful especially in the fall. That is when like the trip best.

Have done that several times and it is great riding. Also am taking a trip with a buddy from NJ aroud Lake Superior at the end of the month.
The only time I ride at 60 on those roads is in traffic jams! We generally cruise at 85-90 and I still get about 33-35 mpg.

For some reason I get my best MPG when we go to Reno and take the trip over to Lake Tahoe and do the entire loop then go up to Truckie and back to Reno. Both times we were 2 up with bags loaded and got 45 MPG. I guess it is the slow 72+ mile cruise around the lake that makes the difference.
