2012 Triumph Rocket III Roadster, 1997 Valk Tourer
I just bought a 2012 Roadster. It's my first Triumph so I am learning. I've read about TORS, EC tunes, Cat bypasses etc. I love the power of my R3, and am reminded of how much I love it when I climb back onto my Valkyrie. Still, I can see room for improvement. I see lots of pictures of folks raising the front wheel of their R3's off the ground. Can't say that I am particularly interested in doint that, but it doesn't seem like it would be possible anyway on my bike. Please, please, don't misunderstand me. This may very well be due to the fact that I am not the kind to rev the engine and pop the clutch. So maybe it's me. But I don't feel that my R3 has half again as much HP as my Valkyrie. So the question (at long last) is this: What do you feel are the most cost effective mods to be done to the R3? Or, to put it another way, "most bang for the buck". I can't afford blowers, turbo or the like.
Thank you all in advance for your input.

I pull wheelies all the time on my Roadster. I never pop the clutch or slip the clutch to do it. I just putt around in first, then around 1800 rpms I let off the throttle completely then immediately crank it. Lifts it very easily. Sometimes too easily. Then I usually ride it out 20 or so feet. If it feels like it's coming up too high too fast, I let out of it.

Even stock you don't have to pop the clutch, just a heavy hand on the throttle will send the front tire skyward.

Bang for the buck is relative to how much bang, and how many bucks. The stock exhaust is restrictive. TORS will eliminate the cats but leave a restricted header system. Add triple K&N filters or Ramair (very similar results, and price), a good Tune with TuneECU (free download, and $20 cable). No need for a Power Commander. You are looking at a nice increase in power for a very little investment.
If you want to spend another $1000 you can get a full exhaust and get a little more power.

You guys are awesome. I'm pretty sure that the ability to pull (or not pull) wheelies is a problem with the rider! o_O. I can see there is a bit of technique involved. Also, I think I might fear the coming over part. Still, I think I want to try it!
Thank you for your input. I'll have to research a little more, but sounds like TORS, Tripple K&N (cuz I love K&N products anyway!) and a good Tune may be the place to begin for me. I'm not floating in $$$ but I can probably manage that setup in a while.
Again, thanks for the help!

I ride an early production 2005, and it's totally stock except for the GIPro with ATRE. It tells the ECU that the bike is in 4th gear all the time, which eliminates the retarded timing in gears 1-3. I think I paid $100 for it used and it works like a charm.

That's very interesting! I don't know what a GIPro or ATRE is, but I'll find out. I'd have to say that my ONLY disappointment with my Rocket is the retarted timing in the first 3 gears. I can feel it as soon as it happens and it's just about the same time that things are starting to get interesting. THAT is exactly what I wish to be rid of. I know they removed those restrictions in 2013 (I think), but I couldn't find one in my price range.

The easiest thing to do is add the TORs and modify the stock TORs tune to look like the stock TORs tune for 2014 and later. This just open ls the secondaries. This will give significant increase in low end torque.

If this isn't enough then you could add triple filters. This is mainly a high end mid. But then you will have to go on a tuning odyssey, whether it's Dobeck, PCV, or trying tunes that others have made. Or getting your own dyno tune.

If you go with the K&N there are 3 options. Some smaller ones fit under the claw, but the best breathing one is the RX-4040, but it takes a little trimming of the claw.

The GI Pro was used before we had access to tuning software like Tuneboy and TuneECU. With TuneECU you can copy the timing table from 4th to put in the lower gears. Also can set the secondaries to stay open. Lots of people remove the secondaries too.

True enough. If'n I had a PC rather than Apple I'd have purchased a cable and used Tune ECU and just changed that tune myself. Lots of help here for that type of mod, and plenty more for just about any change you wish to make.
