Lifting the R3T

I have a darkside tire on order. In order for me to get it installed, I have to take the wheel to them to have it done.

My problem is lifting the R3T to get the wheel off. I have use of a lift. My concern is with securing the bike while it's up on the lift. I have lifted it before to do other things. It wasn't very secure. I don't quite know how to do it. I've read of some that have used tie downs (to what I don't know). Some folks didn't bother to secure the bike.

I have searched through the forums and haven't found too much that helps.

I need some practical help. Can I just put it up on the lift and remove the wheel ? Do I need to worry about securing it with tie downs ?

My other choice is to pump up the current tire, hope it holds, ride 30 miles to this shop with the DS tire strapped on the back.

You need to secure the front of the bike while you lift the back. Here is a picture from Britman's gallery.



I used a very similar setup when I took the back wheel off mine. In fact Britman's setup was the inspiration for mine. I think you'll like the darkside, and dyna beads work great. But buy them from their web site, the local dealer around here charges a fortune in markup .

Unfortunately I can't mount a board to a wall and tie off.

That's my problem, I don't anything to tie off to.

I didn't mount a board to the wall either. I used the back of my tool box it's about 5 feet wade and weighs about half a ton. Point being you need something big and heavy that doesn't move easily that you can anchor to. I have heard of some guys just using an ATV jack by itself but the thought scares me. Good luck.

You could always use a car/truck or an outside wall.

I don't know if this will help you, but this is what I do.
I put the lift directly under the motor. This lifts the front end but does nothing for the rear.
I attach a (comealong) rope & pulley system to the luggage rack and tie it off to a truss directly above the luggage rack. This raises the back of the bike to any height I want and it seems pretty stable to me. I have never had any problems with this setup.

I don't have any truss / rafters to attach to either.

If I can't find a solution, I may just get a Metzeler 880 put on until I can find a way to lift the bike properly.

harbor freight has a lift for about $300 sale, like the ones bike shops use. just cheap chinese import. but should be fine for homeowner use. it has the rear plate that can be removed to "drop" rear tire/wheel after front is tied off.
i just can't seem to muster up $300 every time they drop price.
