High Speed Wobble - 2008 Touring

Get the front wheel off the ground and the bike stable then grab the fork lowers and push and pull if you feel any play the bearings need adjusted.

Mere Mortal with a bit of common sense and a service manual. No truimph special tools required. Just follow the instructions in the service manual. Do not over tighten.:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Sorry to high jack this thread, how do you post a new thread? I have a clutch issue. Thank you

Suggest you go to "Introduce yourself", and . . . tell us something about your bike, history, and update your profile with where you are.

Basically, go back to "Home". Then click on "Forums" on the top row, second over from "Home".

Once there, you'll see toward the top right of the page, a red button that is labeled "Post New Thread". Click that, and introduce yourself. :) Welcome.

How slim would you say these wrenches need to be and what size are they? I need to do this adjustment this weekend and would like to pick up these tools before hand so I am prepared. Thanks in advance for the info.
Ridefree

Yep your onto it, follow step by step.. SEE F)

The bottom Yoke has 2 allen key wrench bolts on eack fork tube, just loosen enough to ease the grip to allow compression of the bearings, the compression is what gives you the bearing preload. Don't forget to re torque these 4 allen wrench bolts

the 90% back turn on the adjuster nut is to releve the pressure and give Micro clearance in the bearing tapered rollers this prevents any binding or tightness in your steering operation.
If your steering is not smoothly moving when you test ride in other words it feels lumpy then you will need to replace the worn bearings with a R3 OEM approved bearing/seal kit..

The adjuster nut and the Lock nut are very shallow nuts for their size so you will need 2 slim style spanner wrenches to be able to lock the 2 nuts together.

You will see the nuts when you remove the Chrome Cap Nut under the handle bar between the Handle Bar clamps..

Take care to get it right as loosing the front end at speed can be Hazzardous :(:)

Sorry I cannot seem to find it in the search
What size spanner for the adjustment and lock nut for the fork bearings.

someone said it was 1 1/2 spanner which equals 38mm is this correct?

I've got an 05 rocket, got my backrest and rack with hard saddlebags, don't like to run a windshield at all, I had it at 135 the other day, stable as a rock.
but I noticed on my honda shadow that when I have a load on the rear of the bike, and put on the throttle lock, let go of the bars, that I would get wobble. the more weight on the back, the lower the speed at which it would wobble.
no cargo in the bags, = no wobble.

how much rear weight do you have? I agree about the tall windshields not being good for high speed. However, on my recent run up to wyoming, I hit 130 in nebraska with 2 loaded saddlebags, and my ugly milkcrate 3rd 'bag' behind my backrest full as well, and running a tall windshield, I still had no wobble.
but my bike does pull slightly to the left. don't forget about wind.. sometimes it pulls slightly to the right, and mostly it doesn't pull at all.

Interesting, that's the first comment on rear weight I've heard, most people blamed the windshield, but I got the wobble with the windshield off. I recently removed the bags, supports, passenger sissybar, trailer hitch and floorboards, all obviously rear biased weight, 106 lbs total, and went 120+ mph for the first time with no wobble.
