Yup, Gr3ywolf has the TORs and I took his for a spin when he stayed over with us in Florida last month. Come to think if it, I didn't note the whine from his Rocket because I was listening to the exhaust note...
Does the whining you hear happen when you cut the throttle? Does it feel as though something is holding you back and have you had any problem going through the gears? If any of this sounds like what's going on, it could be the bearings in your drive unit and possibly including wear on the shaft coupling.
Consider bearing not fitted correct at manufacture, poor quality, lack of lubrication.

Now that's interesting. Mine is most prominent when I back off the throttle. I have to get a new tire so will ask the shop to take another listen, now that I know I can suggest to them.
It is a pretty good dealership. They hold the Rocket speed record at Bonneville and specialize in performance mods. Hopefully they will pay attention this time and I will be more persistent.
Cycle Barn is a multi-brand dealership so there is always that option of trading it for a Gold Wing if I cannot get the problem, if there is one, resolved. Determining if there is an issue is the challenge, which is why I am going to ask some of the other captains to ride mine at Tahoe, and hopefully one will allow me to take one of theirs out for a comparison.
I actually like that "whine"...it gives the bike a unique "voice". One more thing that makes it unique. I must admit, though, that it really sounded strange when I heard it the first time, but grew to love it. I hope the tranny fix doesn't "fix" it. 8)
Now what the hell's that supposed to mean? :? :x I found the movie lacking...compared to the mental picture I developed while reading the awesome book! You're spending wayyyyyy too much time on the computer, and not enough time on the rocket. Now get out there and ride!!!
I think the whine is very unique to triples as my trident had the same sound and other triumph triple owners bikes are the same. It gives a latent feel of power hidden deep in the fabrique of the bike waiting to be set free. I love it. Whe traveling down a motorway it the outside lane next to the crash barrier, the sound the is bounced back even with the quiet pipes (stock) that I like but it sounds awesome when traveling at 50-60 MPH. 8) 8)
It always makes me aquire a big grin, if you could see inside my lid I probobly look a bit touched in the head and should be put away.
I think it is characteristic of the way the cam chain is located out side the engine and not in the centre, its just some thing you get used to.
One thing I have found is if you hit a bunp you get a vibation for a second, I put this down to the cam chain running across the engine and not in the natural line of travel of the bike, only happens at certain RPM's. Any one else felt this. :?: :?:
