If you have ditched the stock air plumbing - you can remove the snorkel-ly bits from the underside of the seat and replace with metal OR maybe replace the rear-seat-lock-plate with something and bolt the backrest onto that.
Personally I would stick to a stock front seat pan (keep stock cushion or have customised), and make a bracket to hold the OEM Triumph backrest using the 3 holes for mounting the separate pillion seat. Should not be hard to modify a rear pillion seat bracket after removing the pad. I did make my own that way
It should be easy to weld a box section tube to the cut down pillion bracket and fit the OEM backrest in to that with a locking cross pin like a an old style bonnet pin or a machinery sprung ring lock pin as used with 3 point tractor hitches. There are heaps of different types and sizes available and they would look neat and easy to remove if required.
The other advantage is it would move the riders backrest further back than the Classic seat allows which with the roadsters peg position tends to reduce rider stretch room. For shorter riders you still have the 6 dialed positions on the OEM backrest to bring the pad forward.
I have another spare Standard '05-'09 stock rider and rear pillion seat if you want me to bring them with me next week Tony. The early pillion pad is a real narrow domed shocker compared to the Roadster version and no good for anything but modification in my opinion anyway.
Hi Peter, yes bring it with you and we can have a look... I hear what you are saying about anchoring the backrest mount to the 3-M6 bolt holes the rear mudguard. That's one way of doing it and warrants further investigation. Remember, I've done the footboard conversion so I'm not as cramped with the Long Haul seat giving me a bit more 'wriggle room'. The design brief I have is the following:
1. Must look like factory
2. Use left over original seat material to finish OR have a chat to the upholsterer about having the seat and the backrest recovered in leather; however, the leather must look like the original seat and backrest cover.
