Help With Seat I.D. - Part number?

I think when customizing is done "elegantly" it fits. It should blend in with the rest of the machine so that it appears and functions as if it was intended that way from the very beginning. Often, I simply re-do what some engineer has done but would have preferred to do differently. As an engineer myself, my nature is to back track down the decision matrix on how the device/machine/toy got to where it is. It is an inherent part of the creative problem solving skills I get paid to use professionally.

My wife is used to me when so immersed in thought that she could drive a train through the room and I wouldn't notice. She also has learned to expect that what I do works, so she no longer rolls her eyes and exclaims: "You are going to do what??"

Agree to everything you just posted...:thumbsup:

I suggested to my other half a couple of weeks ago that I was thinking about having one of my GSX1100S Katanas as a display in our front room. She said "Cool! Do you need any help?" I could feel the slight sting of a single tear as I replied softly... "What a darling thing you are...":sick::sick: :roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll: Seriously though, I am a lucky boy!

A Suzuki in the front room? - Now my missus is not of the 2wheel faith - but even she'd be calling for the inquisition.

Most of what I do is to resolve an issue - mostly ergonomics or function. Really I have no interest in aesthetics. Price/performance always factors.

BUT the advantage of well done engineering is that it always looks right-ish. And if it does not - then it's not (usually) well done.

So how is the design going you lucky boy? Tony now has a used Classic rider backrest, a NIB Touring rider backrest and 3 classic dual seats to suit (2 NIB and 1 used).
So did you find the upholstery shop to fulfill your dreams?
Tony has the intention of chopping off the pillion seat on the used Classic dual seat and having an upholstery shop refinish the arse end to look factory clean. Much nicer than the butchered cut out seen in the video in my opinion and he is anal enough to achieve it.

After receiving my NIB box rider's backrest he found when opening it that it was a Touring version with different gray upholstery to the Classic black shiny vinyl seats. Identical otherwise except for the upholstery colour and maybe texture. So he then bought my used one as well to chop off the tail and reupholster the new one with the black shiny vinyl while keeping the used one so he does not have to swap out the backrests when switching from solo to dual seats. I did say he is 'anal retentive' didn't I ;):p:D

This was the guy many people in my region go to but it appears he has closed his website and left the following message:

This custom seat of his looks a bit similar to the Rocket's

I haven't used him myself yet but know a few old workmates who have happily travelled the 60 miles North from Canberra to Goulburn NSW, and he gets lots of mentions on various bike forums. He has been around for many years now and you can actually attend for a fitting a bit like a bespoke tailor. Apparently he generally uses the stock seat base and rebuilds to your requirements, arse shape, size, weight, riding position etc while seated on your bike. If you like to be involved he gets you to sit on it during the construction to confirm fit and make adjustments etc.

I have seen his work and it is outstanding I plan if Necessary (not sure if I need to as the seat is comfy on the shorter rides I have done so far but it may need a little taken out of the centre of the seat as the tailbone gets a tad tender) to visit him after I return back to work, H apparently is very reasonable price wise

Thanks for that Peter (you sound like my Agent/PR Manager):D:D The upholstery work is very good but he's a bit too far away. Having said that, if I can't find anyone of that calibre closer (Hornsby area) I might have to make a road trip. There shouldn't be a lot to do so maybe with a bit of planning it could be done and dusted in less than a day. I'll be having a proper look at it next week to nut out the best way to go about this before I cut-off the pillion section.
I had a quick look the other day and it may not be as straight forward as I first thought. Despite having a couple of moulded supporting 'webs' (where the backrest bolts on), I'll have to fit some type of supporting plate. By cutting off the pillion section, I'll have lost a fair amount of support as the pillion section is an integral part of the (one piece) Long Haul Seat and locks into position the same as the rider section making it a very rigid platform to take a backrest. With that gone I'll need to do something...:unsure::unsure:
