head gasket change...tips/tricks?

Hopefully I would have noticed the smashed spark plug gasket area during disassembly, but it's a job I would have had to put off for a little while and missed out on some prime fall riding, including a 400 + mile day ride around the southern part of the Chesapeake Bay next month.

Not to mention the time and money !!
